Or how about the press coverage that spurred on populist outrage when it was reported former Merrill Lynch CEO John Thain spent $35,000 on a commode to redecorate his office?

Turns out Thain walked away with a $1.5 million "golden parachute" after he resigned from Merrill, which was acquired by Bank of America (NYSE:BAC). But you would never guess who got a golden parachute that was pretty close to what Thain got. According to an Aug. 14 report on the Chronicle of Philanthropy web site, former National Public Radio chief executive Ken Stern, who was replaced in March 2008, took a $1.3-million buyout, which has gone almost unnoticed.

As a percentage, I'm sure the government's involvement in NPR is far more than what it is in some of these financial institutions post-TARP. Looks like a double standard to me...

What price would conservatives pay, if we completely defunded NPR and PBS???

I think it is time, next time we are in power.

This is absurd!

Thain's $81 million pay package made him the second highest-earning CEO in the nation this year. Bloomberg News reported that Thain could make another $11 million.

Nothing like comparing apples to oranges.

there is so much corruption in corporate America, that it completely boggles the mind. The connected at the hip relationship between wall street, big corporations and congress/admin makes sure that the BIG money stays within their circles... and that “big money”, in a large part, is given to them, by us... the taxpapers who work for a living.

Oh, sure, the government will make sure that CEOs salaries is capped, wink, wink, nudge, nudge.

Federal appropriation to CPB (Corporation for Public Broadcasting) fiscal year 2009, $406 million. That's just the Federal. They want a few hundred million above average for 'emergency appropriations' in the next few years.
For anyone interested...

Republicans have been threatening to defund NPR, get rid of the Education Department, blah, blah, etc., for years and their budgets grew under Bush1 and Bush2.

One of the unkept promises of the Contract with America: taking the P out of NPR and PBS.
