DENVER- First there was President Obama the golfer. And now – President Obama the fisherman?
Mr. Obama’s trip out West later this week — to promote his health care plan in states like this one and Montana — is going to include a few hours of trout fishing in Montana. Jim Messina, the president’s deputy chief of staff, who grew up in Montana and Idaho and is a wildlife enthusiast, will be taking him.
Mr. Messina disclosed the president’s plan while talking at a conference of Western Democratic leaders here, discussing Democratic gains in the region over the past six years. Mr. Messina was talking about issues of concern to Western voters, among them providing access to hunters and fishermen to federally protected land.

I attended a Trout Unlimited workshop at an gymnasium about 20 years ago where the Orvis shop from Columbia, MD put on a synchronized fly casting display featuring the owner’s wife and another young woman. Obviously no water, just false casting, but they were darn good.
Obama has the natural “girly” motion when it comes to pitching stuff. Our little league coaches would always tell us to throw like a girl instead of overthrow and try to muscle the ball.
Jim Palmer has been talking pitching mechanics a lot lately as an Orioles broadcaster with a huge rookie staff. He has mentioned many times lagging the arm and getting the shoulders squared before delivery, aka “throwing like a girl”, not all arm. Timing is the difference between an 86 and a 93 mph fastball in the majors, same arm different results if the timing is off.
Obie executes a lackluster performance because he is not a sporty or outdoorsy-type man, which is fine. However, when men like him try, just for the sake of a photo op, they come across as weak, inept, (and in my opinion) a touch prissy.
