NEW YORK -- Mayor Michael Bloomberg was dealt a political setback as the city's largest municipal union endorsed his chief Democratic challenger.
District Council 37 is backing City Comptroller William Thompson Jr. The endorsement will give Mr. Thompson much-needed help against the billionaire incumbent, who has already spent more than $36 million on his third-term bid.
The union has 125,000 members and 50,000 retirees across many city departments. They maintain bridges, roads and subways and work in health care, schools and libraries.
It is a diverse force that will provide Mr. Thompson with troops on the ground for his campaign.
Mr. Thompson is the Democratic front-runner. Mr. Bloomberg, a Republican-turned-independent, isn't competing in a primary.

Sucking up to the Democrats works every time.
Is this part of 0’s stimulus package/union payoff?
When I worked for the City University system in the 90s, they were corrupt as anything. I was forced to join DC37, but I hammered them at every meeting I could attend. When the union leadership started using my dues money to go on 5 day “Think Tanks” in the Bahamas in the dead of winter, I threatened to sue for the return of my dues.
Aw, poor baby. God is in control. Don’t be endorsing SOCIALISTS!
Maybe, just maybe, Bloomberg can get a little support from the NRA since any democrat opposition would certainly have to be more anti-gun than he is.
I sure hope the NRA gives such a strategic opportunity all of the due consideration it deserves.
Bwahahahha. Give that king of the toilet bowl position to an out of of the closet liberal instead of an in the closet one.
Bloomberg has descended to nothing more than a punch line. What kind of freeking egotistical idiot would spend $36M and counting to be Mayor of a City when they are already a freaking billioniare? Can't his cash get him primo seats at the Met and invitations to all the cool parties? It's not like this nitwit has any chance for upward political mobility. Just don't get it...
