Susan Atkins On Quest For Parole, Forty Years After Charles Manson Murders
ABC News ^ | 8/7/09 | JIM AVILA and FELICIA PATINKIN

These days, it is difficult to recognize the face of Susan Atkins, a notorious murderer from the Charles Manson cult. Still imprisoned, she's now gravely ill with brain cancer and asking for mercy that she did not give her victims.

It was Atkins who held down pregnant actress Sharon Tate while she was stabbed 16 times.

Atkins described the crime in blood-curdling detail at a parole hearing 16 years ago.

"She asked me to let her baby live," Atkins said at the time. " I told her I didn't have mercy for her."

Manson ordered Atkins and other "family" members to kill eight people, including Tate and wealthy store owners Leno and Rosemary La Bianca, in the Los Angeles area in August 1969.

Manson masterminded the murders hoping to start a war between blacks and whites, which he believed was foretold in the Beatles' song "Helter Skelter."

In the months after the bloody spree, Manson and his "family" were swept up. Atkins initially agreed to cooperate with prosecutors to avoid the death penalty, but soon she stopped cooperating. Instead, she and other women loyal to Manson disrupted court proceedings and sang songs written by Manson on their way to court. Atkins later testified that Manson was not involved in the Tate murders. For the crimes, Atkins was sentenced to death along with Manson and three others. When the Supreme Court struck down all death sentences in 1972, Atkins' sentence was automatically commuted to seven years to life with the possibility of parole, the maximum sentence at the time.

Susan Atkins should have gone to the gas chamber in 1970.

“Society” has been more than fair to her.

No parole.

Isn’t she getting medical care in the pokey? Leave her there.

Were I on the parole board, I would deny her parole. Somehow "humanitarian reasons" does not seem to apply the the Manson family.

I would consider paroling her to the care of Senator Kennedy provided the Senator himself drives her around Cape Cod.

I say that we let her out on one condition. She is released into the custody of Roman Polanski whom, himself, will have two hours of free time with her before he reports for his rape sentence to start.

I have heard that the prosecutor, Bugliosi, thinks she ought to be released.

Bugliosi also btw thinks GWB should be prosecuted for murder.

The Mansons and the SLA terrorized me as a child. I grew up in Southern California, and all throughout the early '70s it seemed that the world was filled with these weird hippie murderous creeps with their shaved heads, swastikas cut into their browline, robbing banks, kidnapping, and getting into shootouts with the police.

I had Democrats for parents, but these Manson freaks were the catalyst that pushed me into being a conservative at an early age.

No mercy at all. Let Atkins die in prison.

Worthy of prayer, but not release. Sharon Tate’s baby would be 39 years old now. That baby was deprived of any kind of life, regardless of the quality.

This is not a just sentence. A just sentence would have been the death penalty carried out. This is also what happens with a touchy-feely criminal “justice” system. Should have sent her here (Texas), we generally carry out our sentences as handed down.

There was the time however, that many were released in the 70s because of “overcrowding” and death penalty ruled “cruel and unusual punishment” at the time and McDuff, a death row inmate, got out and murdered Melissa Northrup (and possibly others?), so we’ve made our stupid mistakes too but I think we rectified that.

“when I get to the bottom I go back to the top of the slide then I turn and I go for a ride...Helter Skelter...”

I never could figger out how he got a race war out of the lyrics on a song about a huge slide in Europe.

Susan Atkins was also dubbed “Sexy Sadie” (from the same Beatles album) and “Sadie Mae Glutz” by Manson IIRC.

Me too. When that all happened, I refused to go anywhere for several weeks and had nightmares for months. It was in the summer, and I also refused to sleep if the windows were open anywhere in the house. I also remember refusing, unsuccessfully, to go back to school.

Tate had her baby cut out of her while both were still living, then she was forced to hold the baby as it was murdered in her arms, then she was killed afterward.

This kind of brutality should guarantee that the perps never breathe a single breath of freedom again. Keep her in jail until she’d dead.

I have heard that the prosecutor, Bugliosi, thinks she ought to be released.

Then clean up your guest room, Vincent, and let her live with you.

Bugliosi also btw thinks GWB should be prosecuted for murder.

Bugliosi might be a good writer (Helter Shelter was excellent) and prosecutor but politically, he's a complete loon. Think Keith Olbermann but less clownish.

Whoa! That first paragraph is unusual (and refreshing) tough talk from ABC.

Maybe her plea is simply to get equal treatment, though. After all, another murderer with a brain tumor is not in prison. In fact, he just got awarded a presidential medal. No wonder she wants out.
