NEW DELHI: China has admitted that its pharmaceutical companies were involved in shipping fake drugs labeled 'Made In India' to Nigeria.

"The Chinese authorities have accepted this position (that its firms were involved in the case)," an official said.

"The Indian government took up the matter with the Nigerian authorities and on further probe, it was found that the drugs had actually originated in China and not in India," he added.

In June, Nigeria's drug regulatory authority National Agency for Food and Drug Administration And Control (NAFDAC) had reported about the detention of a large consignment of fake anti-malarial generic pharmaceuticals labeled 'Made in India' which were actually produced in China.

Following the incident, India took up the issue with China fearing that this could damage the reputation of the 12-billion-dollar Indian pharmaceutical industry in the global market.

Though, China had assured of investigations in the matter, Indian authorities were not given any time frame.

India has asked its missions in the region to step up vigil for protecting the nation's image and market.

Not the first time a product's country of origin has deliberately been misrepresented, but it's interesting that the exporter chose "Made in India" instead of "Made in (name of any given developed country)".

Remember the Chinese tainted milk incident? The factory manager got executed, after a trial in which he was found guilty of “endangering public safety” or something similar.

It will be interesting to see what happens to the perpetrators of this fiasco.

Someone will be set up and executed, but given that China has a vested interest in destabilizing India, this very well could have been a deliberate move by the PRC.

Indian brand name has come of age. Faking Indian brand name is an admission by the Chicoms of the fact that Indian brands are by far superior to anything produced in China. You fake a brand name only if that name carries some weight. Would you ever see Indians faking a “made in China” brand name? Even the Africans and Indians scoff at “made in China” tag.

Depends on how connected this guy is. Nothing happened to the manufacturer of the tires that self-delaminated. Nothing happened to the manufacturers of the cough syrup that contained fatal amounts of anti-freeze (exported to some Caribbean country).

In China, extremely rare executions of public officials and businessmen for corruption are trumpeted to the heavens, whereas the far more common slap on the wrist is the quiet norm. The central government can't really go overboard - most successful Chinese revolutions have been led by disgruntled government officials backed (with huge sums of money to pay and feed armies of rebels) by wealthy individuals.

Dovetails nicely with the overall Chinese goal of causing unrest, encouraging negative perceptions of India and generally seeking it’s dismemberment into a “Europe”.

China should break up the Indian Union, suggests a Chinese strategist

...Its suggestion that China can follow a strategy to dismember India, a country always with a tradition of unity in diversity, is atrocious, to say the least. The write-up could not have been published without the permission of the Chinese authorities, but it is sure that Beijing will wash its hands out of this if the matter is taken up with it by New Delhi. It has generally been seen that China is speaking in two voices – its diplomatic interlocutors have always shown understanding during their dealings with their Indian counterparts, but its selected media is pouring venom on India in their reporting. Which one to believe is a question confronting the public opinion and even policy makers in India. In any case, an approach of panic towards such outbursts will be a mistake, but also ignoring them will prove to be costly for India.
