India approves deals for Ka-31, AW101 helicopters

By Radhakrishna Rao

India's cabinet committee on security has approved the planned purchase of another five Kamov Ka-31 airborne early warning helicopters from Russia for an estimated Rp9.5 billion ($198 million).

To join the Indian navy's five AEW-configured Ka-31s in providing radar picket services, the new aircraft will be equipped with E-801M Oko sensors, which can track up to 40 airborne and surface threats simultaneously.

New Delhi has also finalised a plan to acquire 12 VVIP-configured AgustaWestland AW101 helicopters. The aircraft will be delivered with self-protection equipment capable of warding off missile threats.

I’d like to know how the antenna is placed into a position for landing. Doesn’t look too aerodynamic, and I don’t even want to know how it responds to high winds when the thing is in a hover. The pilot’s got to have some real muscles and gonads to fly that thing. But then again, it’s Russian

I think the antenna looks plenty aerodynamic. It acts as a counterweight to the unstable double-rotor design. Reminds me of a toy helo.

All four landing gear units are retractable, making space for the movement of the Oko radar, which rests flat under the fuselage when inactive.
