DeMint emerges to take on Obama over health care [speculation of 2012 run] [RINOs annoyed]

Vocal S.C. senator has become conservatives’ point man.

BY JAMES ROSEN

WASHINGTON — Soft-spoken, slight of physical stature and not even the senior senator in his own state, Jim DeMint isn’t the most likely choice to fill the role of one-man Obama wrecking crew.

Yet the first-term S.C. Republican quickly has emerged as a leading voice of opposition to President Obama’s bid to overhaul the U.S. health care system with new or expanded federal government programs.

. . . . .

This is a battle I’ve been waiting for and hoping for, for years,” DeMint told McClatchy newspapers. “We’ve got to stop the socialization of medicine. We’ve stirred up a fight.”

. . . . .

DeMint disavows any interest in higher office, though he doesn’t discourage speculation over a possible White House run.

I get asked everywhere I go if I’m going to run for president,” he said in an interview.

Critics of DeMint, including some prominent members of his own party, deride him as a demagogue.

In explaining last month why he won’t seek re-election next year, U.S. Sen. George Voinovich, an Ohio Republican, said DeMint and U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., are preventing the GOP from growing and are turning it into a Southern outpost of hard-core conservatives.

It’s such a pity that Sanford committed political seppuku. But hey, at least we’ve got DeMint leading the charge.

As a life long NORTERN Ohioan I could not be happier that Voinovich is retiring. I wish he would have done it 20 years ago before he ran for governor.

As for turning the Republican Party in to an outpost of hard-core conservativism I say; You Go Baby!!!

DeMint is a better man than Sanford is or ever was. I grew up in Greenville and have known Jim since we were in hight school. Believe me, what you see is what you get. He'd have been more prominent sooner except he has been trying to work within the party for the most part. About a year and a half ago he got frustrated with the RINO drift like most other conservatives did and I think he gave up on the party as it now operates when McCain won the nomination. Since then, it's Jim saying what he really thinks no matter that the team leader thinks of it.

Regards

Get Mr. Sanford out. Elect Mrs. Sanford who was the brains and the spark plug anyway! Sanford and DeMint would be formidable.

I don’t know if any Republican could credibly claim the mantle of “stopping” ObamaCare but anyone who can pull it off becomes an immediate front-runner for 2012. If there’s one person in the whole damn party who actually gets conservatism done instead of just running their mouths about it, that’s going to be a very attractive candidate to a lot of conservatives.

What’s a “hardcore conservative”? Is it someone who speaks the truth, upsets rinos and causes them to go away?

I don’t know much about Voinovich except his reputation as a RINO, but he really stepped in it with that comment. Right now it’s the southern Senators that are providing the GOP with some real leadership.

Real leaders aren’t appointed, they step forward when the need is great and everyone else is shirking their responsibilities (AKA most mainstream republicans).

I would like to see DeMint throw his hat into the ring for President. Either he or Sarah Palin would have my support.

DeMint might me more valuable in the Senate though. I think he should be the Republican leader there. He’s all over th place out there, slamming the Obama agenda. Where the hell has McConnell been? DeMint is the true leader for the Seante Republicans.

I’ve known a bit about Voinovich since he became mayor of Cleveland, Ohio. He rescued the city from the bankruptcy that previous mayor Dennis Kucinich (D, OH) put it in. But he did so by raising the city income tax. I am not too fond of him lately, given his leftist stance on issues and his commentary about southern Republicans (which I agree, are the only ones giving the GOP any leadership).

I reaaly like what I see in Jim DeMint. I’m keeping an eye on him as a future Presidential possibility. He’s my kind of guy.

...Bravo, Jim DeMint. I’m with him on all he’s voted on, especially, increased Federal spending under Obama...
...Oh yea, and George W. Bush...

he’s one of the few we have that can string together a coherent sentence. Why is it that we can put guys on radio that can talk for three hours, but can’t get anyone to Washington that can put two words together? DeMint is a welcome addition to the national scene.
