Congressman wants government GPS in cars

An Oregon congressman says he wants to test having a government GPS unit in every car so a tax could be imposed on the miles driven.

The proposal, H.R. 3311, which calls for a test project costing $150 million-plus, was introduced by Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore.

"Oregon has successfully tested a Vehicle Miles Traveled fee, and it is time to expand and test the VMT program across the country," he said in a statement on his website. "A VMT system can better assess fees based on use of our roads and bridges, as well as during times of peak congestion, than a fee based on fuel consumption.

"It is time to get creative and find smart ways to rebuild and renew America's deteriorating infrastructure," he said.

His plan calls for the Department of the Treasury to study the idea with test GPS-equipped car projects in every state.

Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore.

Cash for clunkers should be expanded to include congressional clunkers like this one.

Anyone suggesting such a thing needs the tar, feather, and rail treatment.

They do not belong in Congress, representing free people.

It’s gonna happen. The idea has been floated in MA and will soon reach a crescendo.

You do not have a right to drive for free anywhere./s

LOL!

Meanwhile I’m putting as many miles on my clunker as I can, even aimless old fashioned cruises to nowhere while I can.

And I want a GPS shoved up his butt.

That's funny, but from the looks of him, I don't think you want to know where his butt is at 11pm on a Saturday night.

these electronic deals will be hacked before they are even mass produced

Congress vermin need direction
GPS, no driver’s seat or steering wheel
Since they’re following the instructions of the little old lady in the backseat with blue lips but have lost their way, and their asses, and don’t know which way to turn.

Yeah, government tracking devices in all cars....sure Mr. Orwell. The NWO try to test fly a new national tax through a hack like this....shameful.

Some putz from the Nevada DOT suggested this last year when it first heated up in Oregon. The idea was retracted within 24 hours due to public outcry.

I actually smile when hear proposals like this lately. I just say to myself, “Well THAT should be worth another 5 GOP seats in 2010...”

Normally I’d say they can install it in my car over my dead body, but I think I’ll just shield the antenna so it can’t connect to the satellites to get a fix. They can come onto my property to fix it over my dead body.

Yeah because we’re just not quite taxed enough when we purchase, plate, insure, gas-up, & drive toll roads etc. in our cars. Maybe we should all just go back to riding bikes & horses...will that make them happy? Oh no, they’ll have to tax that then!

Same reaction in MA, but this crowd will not give up.

Just the fact that the idea is being floated is enough for me to believe that in a couple of years, max, this will be SOP, along with breathalyser ignitions on all cars.

Then they’ll have to keep raising the mileage fees as revenue shortfalls occur and if MADD is successful, causing mileage overall to decrease, another hike.

They’ll keep it low to start, say a nickel a mile and then move to a quarter or so.
