RICHMOND, Aug. 5 -- Gov. Timothy M. Kaine said Wednesday that state agencies will need to cut $700 million to $1.5 billion more this year as Virginia continues to suffer from one of the worst financial crises in decades.
Kaine (D) has asked state agencies for proposed cuts of up to 15 percent and will announce the specific trims by Labor Day. He said the shortfall will lead to layoffs, but he does not know how many.

Let’s start with YOUR salary, Timmy - how many days a week are you working for the DNC instead of the Commonwealth of Virginia? Give it back.
You mean shutting down the rest stops along I95 wasn’t enough????
Maybe the legislature and Gov could take 25% pay cuts along with all the top agency heads.
Lord knows a lot of the rest of us have had to do that.....
The longer the issue of Kaine and the DNC is in the news the better it is for McDonnell. Go Bob!
Stop servicing the unbelievable hordes of illegal aliens looking for public handouts in Northern Virginia!
That was just a publicity ploy to raise the gas tax. They could have postponed one new road and paid for those rest areas for a decade.
ping
You’re exactly right.
Governor Gridlock won’t be satisfied until Virginia’s tax rate is equal to NY or CA.
Richmond ping.
The lines at the DMV will grow longer.
The gas tax is a done deal. That’s why they aren’t talking about it.
You are right of course.
Government always goes for the most visible symbol they can think of to advertize their po’ po’ plight. The other fav is to shut down parks.
As I recall that was a federal favorite....
Step 1) Eliminate 50% of the employees at the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). In a realated effort, restore some sanity to the environmental laws of Virginia, particulary as regards the so-called “Save the Bay” program. This will save the Commonwealth and most of its municipalities billions of dollars over the next 5-10 years.
Step 2) Eliminate 50% of the employees at VDOT.
Problem solved!
There was a news story about local merchants’ business improving on I66 near the closed rest stop, so there was one silver lining benefit afterall.
Anyone gone down I-95 lately?
We travel to take our daughter down to school in NC - we always count the state troopers with people pulled over to the side of the road. It’s normally 50 or better from NoVa to the state line
How much is being generated in revenue there?
Not necessarily. You can do many transactions online. I haven’t stepped foot inside DMV for years.
I really hope this is not true.
Raising taxes in a recession just boils my oil. Well, raising taxes period just boils my oil.
You can’t do everything online.
Their justification is that they haven’t raised the gas tax since 1986. The carrot is the rest areas. But closing the rest areas increases the traffic in the businesses near the rest areas and therefore increases revenue.
Yeah, but how many do each of them have pulled over.
This past Saturday, along a 2 mile stretch of Rte 13, there were 2 Troopers and they had not less than 12 vehicles pulled over --- at one time.
Now that's effeciency!!!!! LOL
