Them Dang Southerners

WASHINGTON -- Southern writer Walker Percy liked to poke fun at Ohioans in his novels, just to even things out a bit.

"Usually Mississippians and Georgians are getting it from everybody, and Alabamians," he once explained to an interviewer. "So, what's wrong with making smart-aleck remarks about Ohio? Nobody puts Ohio down. Why shouldn't I put Ohio down?"

Percy, the genial genius, laughed at his own remark.

Now, apparently, it's the Buckeye State's turn to poke back. In a fusillade of pique, Ohio Sen. George Voinovich charged that Southerners are what's wrong with the Republican Party.

"We got too many Jim DeMints (South Carolina) and Tom Coburns (Oklahoma)," he told an interviewer with The Columbus Dispatch. "It's the Southerners. They get on TV and go 'errrr, errrrr.' People hear them and say, 'These people, they're Southerners. The party's being taken over by Southerners. What the hell they got to do with Ohio?"

Just another example of the contempt members of Congress have for ordinary Americans. Those of us in flyover country are good enough to vote for them, but we are just a bunch of hicks clinging to our guns and religion who need to have big daddy government run our lives because we’re too stupid to make the “right” decisions. Congress needs to be totally cleaned out and have absolute term limits.

All I know is The Ohio State is 0-9 vs. Southeastern Conference in Bowl Games including the last two BCS Title Games.

Don’t blame us! We tried to leave, and states like Ohio wouldn’t let us. If you don’t want the South, we would be more than happy to leave.

Congress needs to be totally cleaned out and have absolute term limits.

Term limits aren't going to happen because Congress would have to limit its own self. Ain't likely!!

But while we're dreaming, I don't like the idea anyway. S'pose I have a great congressman. Why should I be disenfranchised from voting for him? Here's a better idea.

Hit'em where it hurts. No term limits, but...

No retirement if you're defeated, indicted, or under investigation. Put in your term and get out with your retirement... unless you are absolutely certain that you're squeaky clean and so popular with your constituency there's no way you can lose. But each additional term, you're gambling your retirement.

Just another way for RINO and faux-cons to marginalize the conservative base.

First it was the Birthers....now its Southerners....who is next: Pro-Americans against Illegal Alien Amnesty?

There are quite a few liberals, RINOs, and Faux-cons who are just determined to hel the Democrats and liberals in every way

Good point. I believe they lost to Texas in their last bowl game, too. (Big 12)

If it weren’t for Southerners we would have nearly a 100% socialist Congress. Ohio? Blah.
