When a politician says “for the common good” I hide my billfold and keep my back against a wall.

Well actually the constitution doesn’t say that. It says promote the general welfare. Nothing about the common good anywhere in the constitution. Do you suppose they are lying?

Maybe he’s confusing the document that he’s actually read, Communist Manifesto, with the Constitution which he has probably not read.

Isn’t “the common good” a communist slogan?

And all this time I thought the central purpose of the Constitution was to outline the structure and limitations of GOVERNMENT.

Guess I had it all wrong.

“Isn’t “the common good” a communist slogan?”

You got it!
“Go Big Red” in this case, has nothing to do with Nebraska sports!

“From each according to his ability, to each according to his need (or needs) is a slogan popularized by Karl Marx”

I heard a good explanation from Judge Napolitano about a well regulated militia. When the Founding Fathers used the term “well regulated” they mean to “make regular” or “common”. Just passin on this tidbit.

Yeah it does! It's behind the section that legalizes abortions and sodomy. < /S >

The preamble says "promote the general welfare", but that's only one purpose it lists. The others are: to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity.

But it also sets up a system of strict limits upon how the government may go about promoting, establishing, insuring, providing, and securing, those things.

Very little of what the Obama adminstration is doing fits inside those limits.

Notice too that the only one of those actions that is not a direct action upon its object, is "promote". IOW, the Constitution was to set in place a system that would promote the general welfare, not provide, secure or insure it. Anyway, the Obamites actions are historicaly proven to harm the General Welfare, not promote it.

Yes, and the intent of the general welfare clause was not to provide special tax breaks, concessions or class making legislation to privileged groups.

General Welfare in this sense means or meant to the benefit of all citizens. Any exceptions would be unconstitutional.
