President Obama is committed to making sure middle class families do not see a tax increase, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said Monday, after two top economic officials seemed to leave the door open to such a tax hike.
"The president's clear commitment is not to raise taxes on those making less than $250,000 a year," Gibbs said, repeating Obama's pledge from the presidential campaign.
That was after Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner suggested Sunday that taxes increases are inevitable.
"We will not get this economy back on track, recovery will be not strong and sustained, unless we ... can convince the American people that we're going to have the will to bring these deficits down once recovery is firmly established," Geithner said on ABC's "This Week."
Asked point blank whether it was right to suggest it is a matter of when, not if, taxes will be raised, Geithner responded, "It is absolutely right."
National Economic Council President Larry Summers also did not rule out future increases on CBS' "Face the Nation."
Gibbs, though, dismissed the comments as part of a "hypothetical back and forth" that Geithner and Summers allowed themselves to engage in.
"Promising that everyone's going to be on message may be a bar that's too high to leap over," Gibbs said.

This economy is not going to get back on track until the damn taxes are cut so that people have their own money in their own pockets.
And someone should ask Gibbs if he is counting what tax-and-trade will cost us.
Liar.
Gibbs is a moron and a liar!
When the 2003 tax cuts expire at the end of 2010 the entire federal income tax rates go back up to the higher income tax rates of the year 2000. Low income, middle income, and high income are all going to get hit hard with higher income tax rates.
This whole thing about guessing if Obama will raise taxes on the middle class is moot! At the end of 2010 EVERYBODY with a paycheck is going to get hit with higher taxes.
What to do, what to do.
Whatever happened to that guy? 0bama should make him the Czar of Media.
/This is a dupe...sorry, I didn’t see the other one when it posted/
He probably means, “No middle class tax increase IF cap and tax passes.”
Could it be that Gibbs is fanning Obama’s nose at us?
More like fanning OWEbama's fanny at us!
I think Gibbs and Obama are the only idiots in the country who think that there will be no tax increase on the middle class.
Either that, or the Jedi Mind Trick takes a lot longer to work on a nation of over 250 million people...
Ask your smoker friends who now support the added slugs and slackers in the expanded State Children’s Health Insurance Program, (CHIPRA 2009), if they’re all making more than $250k. Zero lies again.
I assume middle class is now defined as those who don’t pay any federal income tax. That number is getting pretty big.
It’s important to keep an eye on this $250,000 figure. Is this household income?
If so, well, there are plenty of two-income households in the U.S. where each husband/wife makes $125,000 per year.
Bam and the boys are in a real pickle here. Either they raise taxes and become the second coming of GWB41, getting their heads handed to them in the next election, or they don’t raise taxes and monetize the debt, leading the ChiComs to take.....oh, I don’t know....Hawaii? as collateral.
Poor Baghdad Bob is probably looking for work and would be perfect for Obama’s propaganda ministry. Perhaps Gibbs would better look the part if he had a uniform and black beret.

very well. Makes sense to me....
There is no way a health bill can be passed without raising taxes on the middle class. Unless they use some tricky math that is just a gimmick.
There may be nothing left to tax, IF "Cap and Tax passes..."
