Obama DOJ Threatened Oklahoma Over English-Only Vote

The Obama administration believes that an inability to speak English is a civil right. It is even more distressing that the administration, legally speaking, may be right.
In April President Obama's Department of Justice threatened to cut off federal funding to Oklahoma if that state's voters approve a state constitutional amendment making English Oklahoma's official language, Sen. James Inhofe (R-Oklahoma) revealed.
The threat came in the form of a letter (PDF) from Acting Assistant Attorney General Loretta King to Oklahoma Attorney General Drew Edmondson. King wrote that "implementation of this amendment may conflict with Oklahoma's obligations to protect the civil rights of limited English proficient (LEP) persons."
This would mean that such people, LEPs, have not only a federal right not to learn English but a right to have government services provided to them in languages other than English.

Oklahoma can say NO to the feds. I suspect that Texas and Missouri will back up the Okies!
Oklahoma should refuse to send the fed any tax collections.
The government gives. And the government can take away.

Incrementally, the desire of a state to one thing in opposition to the feds' desire versus the loss of all federal funds is a huge threat. However, what if a state bundled every regulation, mandate and program dealing with the feds and compared all of their excess costs versus the loss of all federal aid at once? The total cost of the feds' rules might be much greater than the total federal aid. In that case it would be better for the state to give the finger to the federal government and play by its own rules.

This couldn't have anything to do with the fact that all counties in OK voted Republican in the last election, would it?
I guess this falls under the same rule as the commiebama crowd trying to gag the GOP Senatorial candidate in Arizona by threatening the Governor with bailout funds.
They need to tell the DOJ to kiss their collective a$$e$.

According to polling produced by Newt Gingrich, Americans favor making English the official language by a massive majority, something approaching 90% if I recall correctly. This is a godsend to the Republican party by a ham-fisted Department of Justice.
Newt Gingrich knows how to run with the issue,in fact he has already advocated doing so, let's see if Michael Steele can make anything of it. I ask again as I have asked countless times in these threads, who should be the chairman of the Republican National Committee?

Obama DOJ Threatened Oklahoma Over English-Only Vote The common sense approach to the de facto language of both Oklahoma and the United States of America is the language of the laws. What possible reason is there for any other position?
This position does not mandate that one must be able to read the language. However, persons who decide to not learn the language is not a reason for the law to accommodate them.

It is even more distressing that the administration, legally speaking, may be right. IIRC, Scotus has found to be "constitutional" these federal power plays, despite the fact there is no constitutional basis for federal extortion of the states.
It really is way beyond time for the states to stand up to the feds. Some dirtbag in DOJ threatening the people of OK to not pass a constitutional amendment is over the top.

Forgive me, perhaps I misunderstood. It seemed like you were saying that Oklahomans are pansies. If that is not what you meant, I apologize. On your about page, you can ‘fly’ your state flag, and may also register for special pings from FReepers in and about your state. You can also see the list of FReepers in your state. When you put your cursor on a screenname it will tell you when one has joined and if you click the name it will take you to their ‘about’ page. I tend to be very protective of OK but I am sorry I jumped on you, let’s be FRiends.

I don’t go onto pages like you described just because all I want to d is be here like I have been for YEARS so that I can get the very latest and best news from credible cources which to me is Free Republic and Thank God for Jim Robinson the founder.
I’m glad you realized I did not do nor said what you thought I had done or said. I have jumped on people previously for grouping a whole state over things others have done. It’s silly and ludicrous to say the least because not all people are the same even though they live in the same state. I think we are ALL protective of our home states or our adopted states.
No harm done. We ARE FReepers who have the same goals for our familis and our country and the main thing is to remain united in this world of evil, chaos and CHANGE. Change that is doing none of us any good at all but destroying our country.
We have in the past and will continue to make mistakes in our country. No doubt about that because we are all human but...I will take any state in this country over any other country in the world, any day, any time and would never insult any of them.
Nothing to forgive...
