Newt Gingrichs political group quietly pulled in an impressive $8.1 million in the first half of the year, a cash haul that enabled the former Speaker of the House to finance a robust political operation that includes at least 17 employees.
A report filed Friday with the Internal Revenue Service shows that American Solutions for Winning the Future accepted at least $460,000 from oil interests in the first half of the year, after advancing offshore oil drilling as an issue during the 2008 campaign cycle, and $200,000 from the Workforce Fairness Institute, a business-backed group opposed to the Employee Free Choice Act, which Gingrich has lambasted as a mortal threat to American freedom.
Gingrichs aides said Friday, the group is not a campaign-in-waiting for Gingrich, who makes many short lists of prospective 2012 GOP presidential contenders.
Absolutely not, said Dan Varroney, American Solutions chief operating officer. American Solutions exists to reflect the interests and views of a tri-partisan majority of American people and to provide solutions and transform the country from the world that fails to the world that works.
Dan Kotman, American Solutions spokesman, said the group is one of the nation's largest grassroots organizations of more than 1.5 million members and has accepted donations from more than 200,000 people and groups.
Were happy to be supported by other organizations and individuals who agree with our position but we would never change our positions based on financial considerations, he said.
The operation, which includes a pollster and fundraisers, promotes Gingrichs books, sends out direct mail, airs ads touting his causes and funds his travel across the country via charter and first-class airfare.

I will not run for President for $2 mill. saving us $6 mill
newt is a bit RINO-ish to me. He was good with Contract For America and as a strategist but no RINO s**t Newt. He is like a more conservative version of McCain.
I’m not sure Newt is interested in running for President. He is however, one of the most thoughtful of those being talked about for the job.
Right! Just query Newt on Global Warming.
Sorry to inform you, he’s just another pol.
When an issue comes up and I find myself in disagreement with someone like Gingrich, a little research will often reveal that his non-profit organization has collected a lot of money from an industry organization or lobbying group on the other side of the issue.
Ten bucks says that you'll find one or more "alternative energy" groups listed among his organization's contributors.
Newt is just another example of if you live in D.C. long enough, you become just like them.
Well to begin with, I wouldn’t vote for myself nor would I advise anyone to do so.
I have followed Newt for years and been supportive of him. My concern is that he’s finally smelled the roses and is cashing out. I wouldn’t really blame him.
This BW stuff will have a tremendous negative effect on OUR economy and Newt’s position indicates to me that he’s a beltway guy, isolated from the flyovers, going along to get along.
Ya think?
We have the best government money can buy.
Just my humble opinion, thanks.
Whore.
I hope he spends it on conservative candidates.
I know I wouldn’t spend another dime on anyone that proves up front that they will carry the conservative banner, and that includes Newt.
Don't even go there. I ain't gonna vote for that dumb RINO SOB under any circtances. If he's the nominee the RNC will never see another dime from me.
