It was said in the vernacular, ebonics some would say.

“Skippy” (his white nickname) Gates said something like this when asked to step outside:

“I'll meet yo mama on the porch (or outside)”

The reference “yo mama” is derogatory, one “expert” says it has sexual implications.

I do know it is an insult, and an insult to the person you are talking to’s mother.

So arrogant protected FOO (Friend Of Obama) racist waiting-for-an-opportunity-to-call-whitey racist and state “this is the way blacks are treated in America.” got his golden chance to play the race card and he took it.

Gates has been pampered and deified (a "highly respected celebrity professor") to the point that he didn't feel he had to obey any white man because he is black and his buddy Obama is Present of the United States.

He jumped on the opportunity, and Obama backed up his racist arrogant actions and now a lawyer friend of Obama’s is taking this national.

One of the black pundit lackey's of race baiting said on TV last nite that saying a harvard professor is arrogant is like saying a basketball player is tall.

Not relevant, your genes don't make you arrogant, bigotry does.

Crossed the line there. So an apology owed. He owes it to Jimmy's mother, anyways, to bring her into this because God knows (INAUDIBLE) her out on this, too.

This reminds me of the time when my grandfather, who was 90 yrs. old at the time, punched out another old guy in his nursing home because the guy called my grandpa a son-of-a-bitch. My grandpa said "that was an insult to my mother".

I suspect Gates didn’t just say ‘yo momma’. I suspect it was a vulgar reference to Crowley’s mother.

He did say "yo mama" which is a vulgar reference to Crowley's mother as he said it to Crowley.

It's one of he worst things you can say to another person if you are a gutter dwelling racist like Gates.

He knew he was insulting the officer and his mother big time.

Why not, he's Obama's buddy.

Remember the video shortly after Obama was made president (by ACORN and the MSM) of a black woman going up to a cop sitting in his car and telling him that he can't arrest her or any blacks because Obama is president?

LOL, that's how Obama voters think!

This was a police officer being insulted by someone who followed him onto the porch to continue insulting him.

I don't think police should be forced to accept this type of behavior from someone he was trying to help by checking out a possible break-in 911 call.

Crowley warned him, but Gates wanted to continue his rant calling him a racist and other remarks.

Please, do not misunderstand me—I think Crowley was right in his actions. Gates is, at the very least, an elitist, and most probably a race baiter too. My question was more about the insult about the “mama” comment and why that is universally known as “fighting words”/ crossing the line. I was more questioning why guys know those kinds of words take it to another level. I'm in Crowley's/police officer camp.

They sure do hire some interesting “distinguished professors” at Harvard. I went to middle and high school at inner city black schools and I never heard one of those public school teachers resort to ‘yo mama’ insults. Come to think of it, I never heard it amongst the hoodlums after middle school.

Yes, “your momma” or “yo momma” means “Your mother is a hooker. Any man can talk to her to negotiate the price”

Must not have been that insulting or else Crowley wouldn’t have consented to have a beerfest with Gates and Obama.

Then you probably had a more ‘authentic’ experience than Skip did—given that he also states in that same clip that he was the fourth generation in his family to be college educated.

‘Your mama, your mother, and this, that and the other, things that would do when you were bantering as a high school kid’

Again, I suspect it was more than just ‘yo momma’.

“This is one of the most outrageous bits of Gates’s behavior. He denies that he said anything about Crowley’s mother at all, and that Crowley must have made it up after watching ‘Good Times’ episodes back in the day. Yet, here’s a clip of him in 1996 where he also talks about trying to end the hundreds of years of ‘yo’ moma’ insults in the black community (towards the end of the clip):

http://stuckon-stupid.com/2009/07/27/henry-louis-gates-explains-the-one-ngger-syndrome/";

Thanks for the post. I see he managed to criticize Clarence Thomas as a hypocrite. I saw an article he wrote asking Anita's Hill's opinion on OJ’s supporters. She's evidently a friend of his. I wonder if he had anything to do with her testimony against Clarence Thomas.

One thing I will agree with Gstes about, he is a product of affirmative action and wouldn't have gotten to where he is without it. Clarence Thomas who he calls a hypocrite got to where he is by his intellect and hard work, not race baiting.

I think I saw a transcript of this video someplace. Does anyone have a link to the transcript of your link?

Sounds right to me.

He was calling the officer's mother a ho.

Like I said, a deeply vulgar dig and sweet little Skippie knew EXACTLY what he was doing because he is entitled.

This little beer drinking meeting scheduled for Thursday is gonna be all fluff unless the officer stands up to the racist Gates and his enabler Obama.

But then that would be signing his death warrant wouldn't it?

I thought everyone knew what Yo Mama meant. It’s a slur on you to denigrate your mother. It’s an insult. Is Greta really this lame?

Way back when, blacks had a term called “wolfin’”. They would try to outdo one another with statements like “yo mama wears combat boots” or your momma chases troop trains. When in a hurry, they just said “yo mama”
This prof is just sinking to his basic culture.

When one of my now-grown sons was in 2nd or 3rd grade, he got off the school but VERY upset. After a while he said that one of the other kids said something bad about his mom (to wit, me). After some more teeth pulling, he revealed that the other kid had referred to my son as a muthuh******. Nice in early elementary school in a highly rated, lily white suburb, don’t you think? In street terms, that is how I translate any ‘mother’ ‘momma’ reference.

Again, "yo mama" IS more than "just" 'yo mama'

Here it is from the urban dictionary:

3. "Yo mama"
An derisive term, equivalent to m*****f***** but can be used in general company because it's not a swear word. Term often precedes a fight.

Say something about someones mother--yo mama--them's fighting words.

And there was more.

Gates said "this is what happens to a black in America" plus he called the officer a racist, implying or saying that this wouldn't have happened if Gates was white.

Which is BS, I've seen the tv show cops!
