Obama to drown police racism row in beer

US President Barack Obama will try to defuse the first race controversy of his term Thursday by sharing a beer with the other two main actors in the drama on the back lawn of the White House, officials said Tuesday.

Spokesman Robert Gibbs said the gathering of Obama, Boston policeman James Crowley and black scholar Henry Louis Gates would take place around 6:00 pm (2200 GMT).

"Weather permitting they'll probably sit at the picnic table, behind the Oval Office" and close to a swingset installed for Obama's two daughters, Gibbs said.

Obama invited Crowley and Gates to the White House in an effort to move past a high-profile controversy sparked when the white Boston police sergeant arrested Gates, a prominent Harvard University professor and personal friend of the president, during a July 16 incident at the scholar's home.

If I was Crowley, I’d give this a pass.

Who wants to have a beer with a couple of arrogant, snotty, racist jerks?

Talk about a racist act. Obama is demeaning all Irish by thinking that all he has to do to duck out of a gaff is buy a Mick a beer!

This is embarrassing and disgusting.

But I’m sure Crowley is under a lot of pressure from the city of Cambridge to do this, and I’d imagine he values his job...

I understand Gates said he’d be there, but he doesn’t drink beer.

I wonder if it would be considered a hate crime if Sgt Crowley were to throw the beer in odinga's face?

Pick your poison...

If I was Crowley, I would refuse to meet, saying I had no regrets or change of mind for performing my professional duty. I would not allow myself to be exploited for political reasons.

I agree.

Crowley should just stick by his guns. Refuse to apologize and say that he has moved past this and sees no need to meet. No need to talk and talk just be to the point.

As far as being fired. In this celebrity world - if he were fired, he’d probably be offered a show on fox.

Neither the governor of MA nor the mayor of Cambridge supported Sgt. Crowley.

If they didn’t know before, they know their position now. Under the bus.

Look for b&e rates to skyrocket in Cambridge. Those libs will be too afraid to call 911.

YUK. How can Sgt Crowley stand to go there and be patronized by those two buffoons and become a white poster child for a black “teachable moment”

He should at least request wine instead of beer
