The 911 caller who reported a possible break-in at the home of black Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. did not mention race in the call, according to a statement issued by her attorney and backed up by Cambridge Police Commissioner Robert Haas.
Lucia Whalen placed the 911 call July 16, saying she saw two men on Gates' front porch who appeared to be trying to force open the front door. The call led to the arrest of Gates by Cambridge police on a disorderly conduct charge, and a resulting national debate about racial profiling.

I think any "teachable moment' resulting from this incident should include this material, as well. I wonder why the police haven't released it yet.
With this story, it is looking more and more like Gates simply acted like a jerk and screamed racism just for the effect/affect (I can never gat that right).
effect (noun - usually if you have a the in front use effect).
Because it doesn't fit the template.
The mayor will probably not allow the tapes to be released! She was on TV and it was clear she only “mildly” supported the police. She wouldn’t answer questions directly. Always wanted to change the topic to what she was doing to combat racism in the community.
The media has a certain template. A white caller by nature would have to refer to them as black. Damn the facts. It’s that simple.
Thanks for posting the article.
This is not exactly true. I read the first reports of the 911 call, and what she said was “two men WITH BACKPACKS on Gate’s front porch who appeared to be trying to force open the front door”.
effect is a noun
affect is a verb
hope this helps, :)
The race carders are breathing new life into this. They now think Crowley may have lied in his police report.
But the police report was based on what the woman told him. Not her 911 call.
This uproar will now lead to the tapes being released and it will show Gates to be a pompous race-baiting pig.

Release the tapes when "skippie" Gates, and Sgt Crowley are at the White House."Keep your powder dry until you see the whites of their eyes"
That would be a teachable moment !
She has olive-colored skin. She’s darker than all those eeeevvvvillll White people, and that makes her not be a racist.
Madness.
Irregardless we wonder about the long term affects and those who will be effected by this situation. ;)
Gates was on C-Span 2 last night promoting an encyclopedia that he had been involved with. He's a smooth talker but totally trashed Justice Thomas twice in the little bit of his talk that I heard.
Police records not relating to an ongoing criminal case can be obtained under the MA open records laws.
I do not live in the US. Could someone please explain why the fact that the caller did not mention the race of the perps make any difference.
By the way this article is totally false, race was mentioned on the 911 call.
When asked by the dispatcher if the men are white, black or Hispanic, Whalen said, One looked kind of Hispanic, also saying they were larger men.
My answer to your question: If she mentioned race, then Gates could say it was a racist issue from the initial call. However, since she did not mention race the response can not be classified as predicting a certain race therefore carry a certain racist attitude into the initial situation.
Thanks for the answer. This PC stuff regarding race has gone WAY too far.
