WASHINGTON The Bush administration in 2002 considered sending U.S. troops into a Buffalo, N.Y., suburb to arrest a group of terror suspects in what would have been a nearly unprecedented use of military power, The New York Times reported.
Vice President Dick Cheney and several other Bush advisers at the time strongly urged that the military be used to apprehend men who were suspected of plotting with al Qaida, who later became known as the Lackawanna Six, the Times reported on its Web site Friday night. It cited former administration officials who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Where was the concern for the Constitution over that Alabama gunman?
This is just an effort to drag Bush back into the story. I think it was David Broder that wrote about an Obama staffer wishing Bush was back... they just can’t get enough of kicking him around, and they desperately need a punching bag because Americans are starting to hold Obama accountable for stuff now.
You’d be amazed at some of the things I’ve considered doing.
Yes - nearly unprecedented. Previous examples would include what occurred in Waco under the Clinton Regime.
Off with their heads! How dare a president and vice president discuss options in order to protect American citizens—dastardly!/s
I.e., there was a conversation in the Cabinet Room about how to apprehend the Lackawanna Six. Every possibility was appropriately discussed, including a military action. A decision in favor of federal LEOs was made...and the New York Times is over-rteacting.
Does that pretty well describe the situation...???
"nearly unprecedented" - I think that means it HAS HAPPENED BEFORE! /s
And we know NYT would never lie about anything. Besides, who cares if there were TERRORISTS in our midst!
Didn't we use the military in New Orleans during Katrina? I believe NYT expected the military to do MORE there.
George Bush is no longer President and we have many more problems today than we did when he was. So, how about NYT focusing on those instead of rehashing the 'old news' as RATS would call it.
I thanked God every day for 8 years that Gore or Kerry were not elected president.
I guess it would have been okay with NYT had Bush BURNED DOWN the place instead of THINKING about arresting them! /s You know it was okay with NYT to BURN TO DEATH a bunch of 'religous nuts' as long as it was BILL CLINTON!
To save a few Bills?
The sentence about dispatching troops “into the streets is virtually unheard of” is the latest in a long line of AP bullsh*t.
I saw US troops, including friends of mine, on duty in the streets of Wash. DC and Baltimore during the 1968 riots, as well as during the protests at the Pentagon in 1967, etc., and during May Day 1971.
Since DC is a Military District (a late friend of mine was one of the last three military governors), it can call on federal troops during an emergency.
Saw this again on 9/11 (I live three miles away from the Pentagon).
Federal troops were used in New Orleans (my son was on standby call to go there after having returned from Iraq).
Don’t believe anything AP says on security issues, Iraq, domestic terrorism, and Obama.
The US Marines have been used dozens of times to protect Federal postal carriers, their mail and their routes. This happened after the implimentation of the Posse Comitatus Act and as recently as the late 1920's.
I'm not at all excited about US Armed Forces engaging in traditional "domestic" law enforcement functions. But, in extreme, unusual and very limited capacity it has been done before. I can foresee circumstances in the future where well-armed, trained and foreign invaders might outgun civilian police capabilities to elude capture or cause undue danger to the public. In that instance, perhaps the military is the best option. No crime in that.
Yes, and it turned ou badly.
The federalized National Guard helped carry out an unconstitutional and criminal order from the mayor to violate citizen’s Second Amendment rights under color of law.
To date no charges have been brought against the mayor, the police chief, the General in charge of the troops, or anyone who participated in the crimes.
As Zero’s numbers fall you will see more and more of these far fetched anti-Bush stories...this one is so stupid it’s laughable. Who is combing through these papers to find these tidbits? Don’t they think there are more pressing matters they should be investigating than something Bush THOUGHT about in 2002?
This is one of the most misreported "facts" of hurricane Katrina. ABC News had an erroneous report where they claim OK National Guard troops were confiscating weapons. It never happened. Their own footage shows NOPD, in cami-pants and black shirts with bush caps on, handcuffing civilians and relieving them of their weapons. Then, Bob Woodruff calls these men "National Guardsman", when anyone with a brain can tell they're clearly not. Immediately, the footage cuts to actual Guardsmen knocking down a door of an abandoned and flooded home as the troops are looking for bodies and survivors, not weapons. The editing, along with Woodruff's reporting, make it appear it's Guardsman helping them collect weapons, but it's entirely based on editing and mistaken commentary by Woodruff. But, the report is spread all over UTube as "National Guard" confiscates weapons.
Of the 1,000+ weapons that were confiscated, not a single weapon was taken from a homeowner by National Guard troop. They were all taken by NOPD. While it's true the NOPD Chief of Police asked the Guard to remove weapons from homes, they didn't. All this misinformation comes from a single, erroneous report from ABC News.
Right on and don’t forget Ruby Ridge. Innocents got killed in that debacle leaving Randy Weaver a widower, and having to bury a young son.
Yeah......that was ok though because after all they were american citizens.
Do you have a link for that? I’d love to find that that was the case.
Yeah, virtually unheard of, right? No offense but isn’t our military supposed to protect us from enemies FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC?????
