Athletes angry about ESPN's handling of Roethlisberger situation (Race)
Sun Sentinel ^ | July 23, 2009 | Ethan J. Skolnick

Lots of chatter on Twitter tonight about the accusations of sexual assault against Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, and the tepid reaction of the sports media, starting with ESPN.

Again, there's no official criminal complaint yet, and that differentiates it from many other recent controversies.

Several prominent athletes don't seem to care much about that distinction, however.

They see racism.

This was Amare Stoudemire's feed (@Amareisreal):

I don't care if they showed it a few times,Plaxico was all over the news and he shot his own self, and I here about big ben on twitter, Wow

man ben rosinlberlger or how ever thew hell u spelled it got a rape charge against him but if that would of been mike vick he be on the news

QB pittburgh steelers got a sex assault and the news aint even report it, hmm they reported viking boat party, vick dog fighting.- POLITICS

Kobe bryant, miketyson, deshawn steveson, when they got sex charges it hit the news but I wonder why not BIG BEN let me find out we in the 70s.

Apparently, some of those were actually retweets of posts by Cardinals defensive lineman Darnell Dockett, and Stoudemire just didn't use RT.

Again, there's no official criminal complaint yet...

This incident allegedly took place more than a year ago.

I gotta admit, if Amare was accused of sexual assault I’d probably believe it. But Ben?? Good ol’ Ben? But he looks so friendly. Golddigger.

I still think Plexico got a raw deal. It was stupid to carry a gun, but just gun possession should not be a crime.

This is easy. People want to give non-thugs the benefit of the doubt.

As an unemployed white male, I apply for countless jobs and I am required to answer the EEOC portion of the application otherwise it WILL NOT be considered.

HOWEVER, if I apply for the same job with the same resume under a different email address and respond as a BLACK MALE, I get a response ALL THE TIME.

NO THERE IS NO RACISM GOING ON HERE, BECAUSE I AM WHITE.

NEW RULE:

If you don’t file a police report, A CRIME DIDN’T HAPPEN.

It didn’t even “allegedly” happen.

Any civil trial should weigh this heavily.

I never believed it about Kobe.
I never believed it about Tyson, either.
But then again, I’m a racist Conservative, so what do I know...

Funny. Around here they’re covering it. They didn’t make a huge deal of it when Jerome Bettis was falsley accused of a similar thing a few years ago. Not that I recall.

Why does it seem that the more equality that is happening the worse the complaining of racism is getting? This is ridiculous.

I think the chick in question is being paid to distract Ben such that his playing suffers. Why didn’t she go to the police? Why wait a year to file a lawsuit?

I agree. They don't want to let go of the crutch.

I guess when 90% of criminal athletic incidents involve “people of color” and usually guns and trials, it is news. Especially murder and dogfighting.

A year-old deranged woman who makes an non-criminal accusation about Ben is not the same as OJ, Iverson, Kobe or Ray Lewis, sorry.

The media loves to slam white guys, Bob Ley does a Liberal apology show every night on ESPN. The recurring theme of illigitimate, poverty-stricken guy given an apologist, redemption Hollywood-esque twist for positive PR is the steady diet the sports media loves.

I hate ESPN, I turn off the sound.

A year ago. No criminal complaint. Only a demand for money. There IS no news here, just attempted blackmail.

Enough to make me suspect of what recruiters are doing and documenting what is happening.

I have a journalism degree and plan on using it.

I can understand Juanita Broaddrick not filing a criminal complaint against then Attorney-General Bill Clinton (she wanted to keep living), but this situation isn’t comparable.

Ben’s got a civil complaint, the woman has never filed any sort of criminal charges... anyone can civilly sue anyone else for anything.

Claiming this situtaion is the same as the criminal actions against other is laughable.

Frankly, given the no threshold required for a civil complaint I personally as an editor would not have run the story either. This is TMZ rumor mill crap at this point.

A year later the woman files a civil complaint? Never ever filed a criminal complaint? Drivel as far as I’m concerned.
