California is the biggest destination for those granted asylum

Every year the federal government grants refugee and asylum status to "persons who have been persecuted or who have a well-founded fear of persecution" in their native countries.

The legal difference between a "refugee" and an "asylee" is the former requests refuge outside the United States, while the latter requests it after entering this country.

The U.S. Office of Immigration Statistics compiles data on these two groups.

Its latest report indicates that 60,108 persons were admitted to the United States as refugees in 2008.

The leading countries of origin were Bhutan, Burma and Iraq. The leading countries of origin for the 12,187 asylees were Colombia, China and Haiti.

OIS statstics are broken out by age, gender, marital and parent status and state of residence.

Almost 16 percent of the 2008 refugees settled in California, followed by Texas with 8.5 percent. Likewise, California is the leading state of residence for the 2008 asylees (34.3 percent), followed by Florida (19.7 percent).

Don’t worry BHO and the Congress are busy at work doing to the rest of the nation the same things the Left already did to the once great state of California.

It won’t take long. It wasn’t THAT long ago was Reagan Country.

Bhutan, Burma, Iraq, Colombia, China and Haiti.

What happened to all the refugees and asylees from Iceland, Finland, Sweden, Luxembourg, Switzerland and Belgium? Missed ‘em, I guess. ;-)

Will all those seeking assylum please turn left > California is that-a-way!!

It's bigger, with prettier people, and mountains, and more beaches, etc.

And did I say "prettier people"?

We have enough in FLORIDA - go away.

This isn't news...

People good and bad have *always* come to California...Like Charlie Manson did when he came from Ohio, and Ronald Reagan from Illinois.

However, with our skyrocketing unemployment, foreigners are no longer needed and immigration reform is needed badly.

As these people bail out of totally screwed up countries, our corrupt Federal government offers them an open door... Not likely are they going to choose the corn fields or rust belts of the mid west over the west coast.

Of course, with unemployment as high as it is, it makes ya wonder why in hell the government would be inviting "anyone" into America at this point.

So, yes, ILLEGAL ALIENS, especially Mexicans (millions of ‘em) and a handful of Canadians, do get food stamps. Remember that the next time someone tells you they don’t.
