Iranian state media say a passenger plane has crashed in northwestern Iran, killing all 168 people on board.
State television said Wednesday the Iranian airliner was heading to the Armenian capital of Yerevan when it went down near the northern Iranian city of Qazvin. The plane crashed 16 minutes after taking off from Tehran's Imam Khomeini International Airport.
Reports quote some witnesses as saying the plane was on fire in mid-air.
State television quotes an unidentified witness as saying the plane suddenly fell from the sky and exploded on impact, causing a huge crater. However, the managing director of Iran's airport authority said there were no indications of problems in conversations between the pilot and ground controllers before the crash.
Video footage showed a field littered with small pieces of smoking wreckage from the Caspian Airlines plane. Investigators are searching for the plane's black box (instrument recording device).

I wonder if it was full of rebellious anti-government yutes.
Blaming the jooooos / Great Satan in 4....3....2...
I heard about this crash on the BBC radio news as I was driving to work today. They attributed the crash to the US embargo against Iran.
(flame suit on!)
If we learned anything from the past few weeks, it's that the vast majority of Iranians want many of the same things we do. I don't think there is one case, ever, of a war starting between two democratically governed countries. In any case, it's rare.
Of course, I wasn’t surprised about this. In the view of the BBC, America is to blame for most, if not all of the evils in the world.
I heard it was Reagan’s fault...tax cuts ya’ know.
ooops...Keith Olbermann fact checker misfires again...Admin please chance number to 168,
“They attributed the crash to the US embargo against Iran.”
I didn’t know we had embargoed “lift.”
Uhhhh. Another story states that it was a Russian-built plane. I suppose the Russians have been following this embargo to the letter.
Yeah, right.
That's what I've been hearing too...but this was a RUSSIAN-MADE PLANE...
But that's the media for you...never let the facts get in the way of a good story...
Allah ? was that you?
Unconfirmed reports said the Russian pilot of the plane may have been attempting an emergency landing after facing engine problems, shortly after takeoff.
Iranian TV showed a large crater and indicated the plane was probably traveling at high speed when it crashed.
Iran has suffered from a rash of plane crashes in recent years, due to an aging fleet of passenger jets, many of which are leased from Russia. Economic sanctions have also prevented Iran from purchasing spare parts for many of its older Boeing and Airbus jets.
Yute? What's a yute?
It's even broader, we embargoed Bernoulli's principle in toto, Hook's Law and the second law of thermodynamics. Gravity, however, is still widely available in Iran.
It's like the Caliph said, we should burn all books but the holy quran. If they agree with the quran, they are superfluous, if they disagree, they are heretical.
What did Mo have to say about airframe and power plant maintenance, anyway?
Apparently, it was full of Christians.
Going to Yerevan, that would be my guess too. It’s probable that most of the passengers were Armenian.
Thanks for this info. So the BBC news reader was injecting his completely uninformed and biased opinion into his report. Typical.
re: Gravity, however, is still widely available in Iran
But you need an adapter to get the full advantage of it. Sans the adapter it’s nearly impossible to predict how it will behave.
