MA transgender equity bill fuels bathroom dispute

BOSTON (AP) — Massachusetts lawmakers are weighing a bill that would end discrimination based on transgender status.

The bill would add "gender identity and expression" to the state's discrimination and hate crime laws.

Supporters say the goal is to give transgender people legal protections at work, in public accommodations and in housing.

Opponents said the bill would lead to a breakdown in privacy in rest rooms, locker rooms and other single-gender facilities and would open women's bathrooms to sexual predators.

This could be good, when standing in the long lines for the ladies room I could 'express some manliness' and go to the mens room with no lines./sarc

What is this world coming to?

Will those creeps go that far?

Yeah, just what we need.... people with sexual disorders permitted to go into any bathroom they like.

Sick.

At some point, people will understand what all of that traditional culture that they tossed out of the window was there for.

Sure...the bill says 'expression' - so if the predator says he 'feels like a woman' who is law enforcement to say otherwise if a bill like this passes?

I hope it’s passed because when it does I’ll be following nice looking young women (age 20-30) into the ladies room.

If I owned a business in MA, I would convert both of my restrooms to unisex now.

The most unhappy, mad customers I have ever seen in a place were the women in Dick's Last Resort in Dallas, TX. They have a unisex bathroom that does not have a working lock on any stall in there. So, every woman had to take a freind to hold the door since the stalls were deep and you could not hold it and sit on the pot. The walls were covered with Maxim syle 'girly' pics. And every woman in the bathroom was mad at every guy at a urinal, which they had to walk past to get to the stalls, even if they did nothing at all. I went once when some out-town-friends asked to - never again.

They say a dozen states already prohibit discrimination against people based on whether they identify themselves as male or female.

I think it would take a little more than just expressing some manliness. You'd have to "identify yourself as male", at least long enough to get in and out of the washroom. Then you could go back to being female again.

We already have laws to protect people. We don’t need this. And we can’t afford it. If this is enacted, law suits will spring up all over the place and businesses will suffer even more. We need to just give it a rest for a while. But I’m sure we won’t.

Almost 40-years ago I lived in a student owned/operated co-ed dormitory at Portland State University, Portland, Oregon. The bathrooms there, which included showers and bathtubs that each had its own enclosure as did the toilets and urinals, were all unisex facilities.

During my residency term there were no problems involving use of said facilities, none whatsoever.

As to unisex facilities that are accessible to the general public, I frankly do no believe that will work well. Sexual predators are not more common in the general population as opposed to university campuses, but 40-years ago such behavior was not tolerated. Today, anything seems to be acceptable in public restrooms!

I wonder how many patriots from MA died or were impoverished by our War of Independence.

Whatever the number, the argument can probably be made that it was a waste.

I lived in a co-ed dorm in college too and had no problem with it but in the general population this is a terrible law.

Especially in Highway Rest Areas, there won’t be a RA(Resident Assistant) to report to...

Looking forward to transgender Department store changing rooms too/sarc

How is that different from now? Been seeing women coming over into the mens room for going on 30 years.

My neighbor works in security enforcement. Public bathrooms are haven for gay activity. So are adult book stores and adult movie places. Just because one gets an operation doesn’t mean their immune to laws concerning sexual solicitation in public areas. Going to the toilet doesn’t mean whoring.
