MUSKEGON, Mich. (WOOD) - Daniel Nichols, who accidentally ran over his 5-year-old son while the boy lay sleeping in a tent, says the state is threatening to take away his children.
A Muskegon County Department of Human Services worker visited Nichols' wife Thursday at the hospital, where his son is recovering, and told her a campground was no place for children to live, Nichols told 24 Hour News 8.
"She went to the hospital and told my wife that she doesn't think it's acceptable for us to be staying in the campground, which we weren't staying in the campground, we were just camping for a week or so, and then we were going to get a kitchenette," Nichols said.
Nichols' son, Mason, is recovering at Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. Mason suffered no permanent injuries, though he has fluid in one of his lungs, Nichols said.
"My son is going to be fine; he's smiling; he's happy about it," he said. "He knows Daddy's sorry. He tells me all the time -- I was there all day yesterday -- 'Be strong, Dad. It's OK. It was an accident. It was an accident. It's not your fault.' "
Nichols, his wife, Ardist, and their children, Mason, and Jasmine, 2, started staying in a 9-by-12-foot tent at the P.J. Hoffmaster State Park campground in late June -- on a rustic site, with no electricity -- for $18 a day.
They had no place else to stay, he said.

We [the FReepers] need to come to this family's defense.
I'll watch the thread (or if anyone starts a ping list, please include me). If someone sets up some sort of relief fund or whatever and I can help, let me know. As a father of a young son and former Marine myself, this breaks my heart. ACORN can overrun the system with welfare but we do nothing for those who defend our constitution when they are in need. Disgusting what we have become.
Happened to us as well, but only for 3 months, then they were returned to my custody. But it took a family court judge ordering them to do it - they had no intentions of ever doing it on their own.
The lead Supervisor was geniunely irritated and curt with me when they were ordered to return the children. They’re scum - and they’re on the prowl.
From the article:
“A fund drive has been set up for the family. You can make a donation to the Nichols Family Fund at any Huntington Bank location.”

Children have been taken from parents in my area because of a minimum standard of living regulation that requires running water in every household (part of a big developers’ racket—no vacation cabins for camping). Several parents have reported that their children were permanently taken away for no other reason, and those parents appear to be clean, educated, sober, hard working, normal,... ...matter of fact, they’re less apathetic and more clean (no drugs) than most other people around here (including the bureaucrats and their relatives and friends on meth).
So go ahead, and raise the stakes. Elect more domestic violence feminists and SNAGs (sensitive New Age guys) into government offices in attempts to herd Americans into bipartisan, anti-family votes.
In general, kids are better off in the custody of their parents than the bureaucrats and their out-of-touch, rich, adopting relatives (lefties—same thing). We need a sea change in business, government and academic leadership.
It is also a common tactic of ex boyfriends/girlfriends/ husbands/wives. For revenge they will call CPS for anything to pull a family apart just to get revenge.
Is driving over tents the latest in “quality time?”
They are worse than scum, and be glad they did not keep checking up/fabricating stuff on you. Then they have a “pattern” and the next judge might not have been quick to return your kids.
I have seen DSS workers lie in court, falsify records, take things completely out of context on purpose...any and every thing they can do to keep a child in the system they will do. They are evil incarnate, and for money...
In North Carolina, as of 1999, they receive about $1100 from the federal government each month for each child in foster care. They only pay out about $400 to the foster family. They are profiting $700 per month per child! No wonder there is no incentive to keep families whole—there’s no money in it!!
>>be glad they did not keep checking up/fabricating stuff on you.<<
They still are, monthly. “Unannounced visits”. I just keep things wired tight and spotless.
In another local case, they removed a child because they found “animal feces” on the floor. In reality, it was wood shavings from the hamster cage.
In addition to the money, they’re brainwashed into thinking that what they do is “for the good of everyone” - which makes them some sort of savior to the public. It’s insane.
Personal experiences w/CPS have given me the opinion that they are truly a self-perpetratine job society.
Always loved that Dickensian wisdom. It tells us that doing good is not to be left to the other fellow. Every one of us has to practice it, as if the Lord doesn’t want to waste a single soul. Nobody was put here to leave His work to “someone else.”
He will help them in heaven. In this life, they are totally at the mercy of evil.
