White House among targets of sweeping cyber attack
AP via Breitbart ^ | July 8, 2009 | LOLITA C. BALDOR

The powerful attack that overwhelmed computers at U.S. and South Korean government agencies for days was even broader than initially realized, also targeting the White House, the Pentagon and the New York Stock Exchange.

Other targets of the attack included the National Security Agency, Homeland Security Department, State Department, the Nasdaq stock market and The Washington Post, according to an early analysis of the malicious software used in the attacks. Many of the organizations appeared to successfully blunt the sustained computer assaults.

The Associated Press obtained the target list from security experts analyzing the attacks. It was not immediately clear who might be responsible or what their motives were. South Korean intelligence officials believe the attacks were carried out by North Korea or pro-Pyongyang forces.

The attack was remarkably successful in limiting public access to victim Web sites, but internal e-mail systems are typically unaffected in such attacks. Some government Web sites—such as the Treasury Department, Federal Trade Commission and Secret Service—were still reporting problems days after the attack started during the July 4 holiday. South Korean Internet sites began experiencing problems Tuesday.

South Korea's National Intelligence Service, the nation's principal spy agency, told a group of South Korean lawmakers Wednesday it believes that North Korea or North Korean sympathizers in the South were behind the attacks, according to an aide to one of the lawmakers briefed on the information.

The aide spoke on condition of anonymity, citing the sensitivity of the information. The National Intelligence Service—South Korea's main spy agency—said it couldn't immediately confirm the report, but it said it was cooperating with American authorities.

I’m sure The One will prepare an sternly worded memo on the subject ... that’ll fix things.

This is much more serious, and Swivel Head will intensify his response. In addition to his own memo, he will order Hillary to send a second strongly worded memo.

When, oh when will these idiots realize that 99.9% Windows-based computers will lead to disaster.

There is only one solution: Heterogeneity (yes, diversity) in computer operating environments.

Any time a society has relied on a mono-culture (Irish potatoes, southern cotton, Dutch tulips, ...) the result has been catastrophic.

For PCs, we need a mix of Windows, Macs, Linux, Unix and “other” Operating Systems.

That way a virus or hack tool can only affect one species. It won’t take down the whole shebang.

The IT folks in your company will not agree. They don’t want to invest the effort to learn new OSes and how to integrate them. But it can be done. It should be done. No, it must be done.

“White House among targets of sweeping cyber attack”

How can that be? I thought that since we now have our very own ‘Kum-ba-ya/give peace a chance ‘President’ who ran around the world making ‘nice’ with all and sundry... that we would be safe ... that we really have NO enemies???? You mean there are really people out there who wish us ill????? Gooolllllyyy!!!! Explain that for me please.

I think this problem is much more pervassive than the occasional headline makes us think. I have a lab server in my home office that is probed two to six times a day. I trace the source IP from time to time and countries along the Pacific rim come up often. Followed next by Eastern Europe.

Well that’s good that Kim recognizes that the Washington Post is a quasi governmental institution!

Hey Kim, next time include the New York Times, MSNBC, CNN, NPR!

Get a Mac. I can’t recommend a specific model, it depends on your needs/wants.

Maybe someone else here can lead you to a selection matrix.

These attacks are originating in North Korea but something tells me somebody else is doing the actual hacking.

“You mean there are really people out there who wish us ill?????”

LOL...if you have seen the video of Boss Putin slouched in his chair, with his lidded eyes not even looking at the tall, irrelevant BO seated next to him, proceeding to read our President the riot act for 50 minutes yesterday, you’d have an indication that not all the world’s leaders are as impressed with BO as our media cult is.
