WASHINGTON - A widespread and unusually resilient computer attack that began July 4 knocked out the Web sites of several government agencies, including some that are responsible for fighting cyber crime, The Associated Press has learned.

The Treasury Department, Secret Service, Federal Trade Commission and Transportation Department Web sites were all down at varying points over the holiday weekend and into this week, according to officials inside and outside the government. Some of the sites were still experiencing problems Tuesday evening.

What are being hacked...public info sites that we could all
go to if we wanted? That would not be so worrisome. If the government is providing public password doorways so that some bureuacrat can access secret data(not normally available to the public) from his laptop at home then that is worrisome.

Secret data nets should not be connected in any way to public nets no matter if firewalled or not and should only be accessible by going into the main offices and accessing dedicated systems or by direct hard wire/fiber systems not wired in to any public systems.

And, if you think we’re not doing it to the Chinese, well...

I'm not sure why - but I feel better.

Yep. When GW was in office and the pentagon was getting hacked 10,000 times per day I bet obama was behind that to (s).

Seems to be spreading. Now I can’t open my ISP’s site to use email, nor can I open the Vanguard site to check on my portfolio. I’m happily surprised that FR is still reachable!

I’m not actually in the Army. Spent my life as a Navy daughter and Army wife and civilian employee in the Army Education system.
Yes, the Chinese try their darndest to break into our systems without much success so far. We’re all trained to be aware of the security risks and our security systems more often than not detect and intercept any attempt to access our computers.

It is only going to get worse. I noted here last October a friend of mine owns one of the largest software security companies in the US. When he wanted to get into the China market he as told - 1 have an office in China with Chinese employees, 2- source code must be in China.

If China has security source it would be terrible - he declined.

IBM acquired his competition and rolled into Tivoli then announced going into the China market. Did IBM have the same rules? Does China now have the source to security software? We’re these sites IBM serviced sites?

Thank for the "good news" information. I have faith in our people - that they can do the job - unless someone steps in the way to stop them. And even then, they'd probably find a way...

NK uses servers based in Japan so not that easy to cut them off.
