The Environmental Protection Agency took a major step toward tougher reductions in greenhouse gas emissions from cars and trucks Tuesday by giving California the green light to impose new requirements that could become the national model for combatting tailpipe pollution linked to global warming.
The EPA granted California's long-standing request denied by the Bush administration for a waiver to allow it to pursue more stringent air pollution rules than required by the federal government. It cleared the way to implement immediately a 2002 state pollution law requiring new cars to increase their fuel economy 40 percent by 2016.
State regulations to implement the law have been in limbo for five years because the Bush administration refused to provide a waiver required by the federal Clean Air Act. Thirteen other states and the District of Columbia have said they want to impose the same requirements as California once the EPA gave the go-ahead.

that should help kill new car sales and make folks keep their current car until it dies of extreme old age—14 or 15 years.
Doesn’t it mean if cars can be inspected at the California border and denied if they don’t meet that standard?
If so, there goes tourism, too!
No big surprise here, McCain was going to give California enough rope also.
Unfortunately, The Feds have adopted Californias suicidal regulations.
I don’t know. I was talking about current California inmates. But, if the California DMV doesn’t allow the transfer registration of cars from folks moving into the state, then they will cut back on folks wanting to move into the state, except for the illegal immigrants who come up from south of the border.
New cars sales are already dead...New cars cost a lot money...Better to buy used...
14 or 15 years?
My neighbor has a 1960s Ford F150 with over 600k miles...2nd motor...Totally stock, in really nice condition, and he uses it daily for work. Super well maintained.
A well maintained vehicle will last 100 years, especially in good weather where salt is not used in winters. Even then, a good undercoating will alleviate that.
As if things aren’t bad enough for the economy in California, these morons come in with this. This is utter madness.

Meanwhile everyone who cares will just leave.
The State is broke because of self inflicted nonsense like this and they have not learned a thing from it!
The problem is, the CA market is so large that when they make a rule, the rest of us end up having to abide by it because products are made for the CA market.
I say, stop selling new cars in CA and see how long it takes for them to drop the rule.
This is not just a California issue. 14 other states have said they would follow suit and implement the California regulations.
Want to see what American states will look like? Pelosi and Rieds plans for all of us!
“I say, stop selling new cars in CA and see how long it takes for them to drop the rule.”
That is a good idea remove the evil Machines and the Semi Trucks also that should make them happy
I bought my last new car in 1982. It is a Mercedes and has nearly 200,000 miles on it. I plan to keep it forever.
