email from VA Homosexual Group: Delegate Races to watch in VA this year

Election Update:

Districts to Watch…

There are many critical races in the Virginia elections this year and EV PAC has been watching all 100 House of Delegates races, to keep our finger on the pulse of this year’s elections. This is already a huge year for GLBT politics, as the national news has shown, and you can help lend your support to our crucial electoral work here in Virginia by donating a special gift of $25 or more.

As it gets closer to Election Day, we’ll be sending you information on a few select districts we think are worthy of highlighting as “ones to watch.” Below is our first round:

In District 13:

John Bell (D) v. Bob Marshall (R) Delegate Bob Marshall, sponsor of the Marshall-Newman Amendment prohibiting the recognition of relationships other than marriage between one man and one woman, is up for re-election. He faces a stiff challenge from retired Air Force veteran John Bell. This is going to be one to watch.

In District 23:

Shannon Valentine (D) v. Scott Garrett (R) Delegate Shannon Valentine, a staunch ally of Equality Virginia, finds herself the target of a number of Republican forces who think her seat is ripe for takeover. Her opponents have chosen Scott Garrett as their point person. The outcome of Valentine's race will be watched from around the state.

In District 86:

Tom Rust (R) v. Stevens Miller (D) Delegate Tom Rust, a longtime friend of Equality Virginia and the sponsor of the workplace non-discrimination bill (EV’s top legislative priority in 2009), sits in what may be the Democratic Party’s top target for takeover. TheDemocratic Party has chosen Stevens Miller as their point person. Rust-Miller will undoubtedly be a closely watched race, even in Northern Virginia’s crowded field.

Equipped for the Campaign Trail

EV PAC will be actively engaged in this year’s elections and will be strongly supporting those candidates who best represent pro-equality values in the competitive districts. With every tool at our disposal, we’ll be working for a fair-minded leadership in Virginia that will start to bring the change we need.

Look for our statewide voter guide - to be released within the next few months - outlining information we’ve gleaned from our conversations with the candidates and from their positions or voting records on our issues. The guide will show who EV PAC believes is best suited to represent the GLBT community, their families and their allies.

We have the will. We have the plan. Now we need your support! By donating to the EV PAC, you can help ensure that we provide the best possible support to good candidates. Let’s get the representation we deserve! If we leave the current political operatives in charge of our future, we will be just as disadvantaged as we are now, or maybe even worse. Please, donate now and join EV PAC’s Campaign for Equality.

P.S. A sustaining gift to the PAC also counts toward our matching gift program. Tomorrow is the end of both the reporting period and the end of our matching gift challenge for sustaining donors. So, if you choose to make a monthly or quarterly sustaining donation to the PAC by the end of the day tomorrow, your donation will be double. If you need to know more about the matching gift program, find information here.

Paid for by Equality Virginia PAC.

Good for you, and thank you for “taking one for the team”.

I don’t have the stomach for that kind of work.
