Am I an idiot for thinking that jail time should be reserved for violent crimes? People like this should pay restitution plus punitive damages.

...so a 70 year old man on his last legs is going to jail? How is that “justice”?

And rapists, murderers, pedophiles, wife-beaters, child-molesters get far less time. Makes sense to me.

Congratulations! I and others sat for hours waiting to post this news event!

Toast to Bernie’s justice and may he rot in D block.

How in the heck could this man possibly pay restitution? He scammed billions upon billions. He lived the high life, now he can experience the same life as those he has left destitute.

Where exactly is he supposed to find that kind of money? It is impossible for him to pay back the amount of money he swindled. A con-job of this magnitude deserves all the jail time they can throw at him. I agree that the punishment for most "white-collar" crimes should be weighed carefully, but in this case Madoff hid behind the trappings of the white-collar world to perpetrate a fraud that boggles the mind and deserves everything they throw at him and then some. Just because he didn't use a gun to steal the money doesn't mean he should walk the steets.

Well, they can't waterboard him.

150 years. Good! That'll send a message. The other message that needs to be sent is that his wife SHOULD NOT get to keep one nickel (they say she can keep $2.5 million), nor his kids or anyone else that was even remotely involved in his decisions within his company.

Just because he didn't use a gun doesn't make his crime any less heinous. The man stole BILLIONS of dollars and gave it to his friends.

What would you suggest as a proper punishment AND disincentive to others contemplating such crimes? Perhaps we take away his Grey Poupon for a while?

As for being on his last legs, 70 isn't all that old these days... he could have another 20+ years left in him... who knows.

Because he broke the law. He committed fraud on a massive scale and stole billions of dollars from people. And we should just say, "Hey, he's 70! Jail would be cruel!" No thanks. Madoff got what he had coming to him, nothing more and nothing less.

So? He'll sit in jail during the appeals process. If the judge wasn't willing to let him remain free until sentencing, he won't let him out pending appeal.

Until CONgress, and various Wall Street giants are in jail, ...who cares? Madoff is only 1% of the $$$$ stolen right under the very eyes of the asleep American public.

Add in some of those GoldmanSachs bonus people too.

I hope they attempt to recover the money from the friends he gave it to under the guise of “return on investment” payments. If no money was actually invested, then they should not have any legal entitlement to it.

If it turns out that there is no law allowing the money to be recouped from those who gained from it, then it seems like now would be a good time to pass such a law to keep future recipients of scammed money from being able to keep it.

I’m not sure how anyone can say this guy doesn’t deserve to rot in jail. He ruined hundreds, if not thousands, of lives. He bankrupted retirees, families, veterans, you name it. I can only guess he did it to keep enjoying living the high life of a zillionaire for as long as it would last. Just because he didn’t do it at the point of a gun doesn’t mean it wasn’t a terrible crime. I only wish he was going to do hard labor for as long as he lasts.

He lost virtually every dollar that people invested with him to begin with. So how is he supposed to earn the money for restitution? Investing in the markets?

Investing in the markets?

The ironic thing is that he wouldn't know how. It turns out that after all of these years, Madoff never actually invested a dime in anything.
