I’m sure it was the Prilosec....That will do it every time. My serious question is: Why didn’t someone in his circle—family, friends, etc.—get the guy help? I suspect their are legal aves open in this situation.

I suspect that he was surrounded by leaches that didn’t want the gravy train to end. They enabled him to spin out of control. Some one early on should have taken him aside and smacked some sense into him. This goes for all the other out of control celebrities and politicians.

Possibly because he was worth more dead than alive.

Oh, for Pete's sake.

The fabulously rich Jackson had people helping him for years. At some point you really do have to take some responsibility and not blame everything on someone else.

The tradegy of drug addiction. If a person has access to money and does not WANT help, there is nothing anyone can do — short of legal commitment to an institution. It’s a free country — people can choose to kill themselves, one drink or one pill at a time.

Everyone around him, family, "friends," and various hangers-on had a vested interest in keeping him happy so that the gravy-train would go on. Anyone who tried to tell him the truth and make him stop his destructive lifestyle was probably very quickly kicked out of the entourage, if not my Jackson then by the various leeches around him.

Fragile, rich people are easily duped by the people around them, so long as those people are willing to tell them exactly what they want to hear. Celebrities are especially susceptible to this type of thing- many of them come from screwed up backgrounds, have little in the way of education and are used to everyone around them saying "yes" to whatever they want.

My wife asked this very question. I answered her with anecdotes about my family members that were serious drug addicts with few resources. It is very difficult to intervene and change the addictive behavior. Rehab only works if the addicts WANTS to stop. People blow nest eggs trying to help their children and for nothing. If the addict doesn't want to stop they'll go through the motions and tell you want you want to hear. As soon as you relax and turn your back on them your wallet and keys are missing. Now couple this behavior with seemingly unlimited resources and a god complex.

You asked — My serious question is: Why didn’t someone in his circle—family, friends, etc.—get the guy help? I suspect their are legal aves open in this situation.

Ummmm..., that’s because you can’t help someone when they refuse. And it’s worse when they have money. It’s bad enough for just “normal” people (in terms of money) in getting them help.

You can’t “commit” someone unless they are suicidal and you can’t get a court to intervene, unless they are incapable of taking care of themselves (mentally) and that’s a real big stretch for anyone to prove.

The bottom line is that others around a person like that, even when they know that someone needs help or they are going to end up dead by their own actions, can’t really do anything about it (by outside force, other than persuasion and getting the person to agree themselves), and that’s about impossible, if that person doesn’t agree with you.

I know from personal experience and seeing how impossible it is to get someone help when they refuse it. And also, you have to keep in mind, that our own personal freedom (to whatever extent it still exists in this country) does prevent that “help” from being forced upon someone.

One thing all the stars like Jackson and Elvis before him have in common is no one dares say anything to them. The worst of the worst latch on to these stars and and in they will do and say what those stars say to do and in some cases they manage to control these people with the drugs they help provide. It is only because Britney Spears parents stepped in and wouldn’t take no for an answer that they saved that woman’s life, she was headed down the same path -
