CONVICTED! Conyers Guilty of Conspiracy [With Statement from John Conyers]
WXYZ ^ | 06/06/09

Posted on 06/26/2009 9:50:04 AM PDT by freespirited

Detroit City Councilwoman Monica Conyers appeared in Federal Court to plead guilty to felony charges that could put her behind bars for up to 5 years. Documents say she knowingly conspired to accept bribes or things of value while an agent of the City of Detroit.

She also faces fines of up to $200,000.

Action News has obtained the court documents that charge Conyers with 'Conspiracy to Commit Bribery Concerning Programs Receiving Federal Funds.'

A cloud of suspicion has lingered over the councilwoman, concerning her role in the Synagro Sludge scandal.

Charging documents from the U.S. Attorney's office allege she met with an individual sent by Detroit businessman Rayford Jackson in the parking lot of the Butzel Family Center on November 20, 2007 and received an envelope containing cash.

Conyers is also accused of accepting another envelope containing cash on December 4, 2007 at a McDonald's parking lot in Detroit.

Conyers has repeatedly dismissed reporter questions regarding the controversy. She has been identified as "Councilmember A" who former Synagro exec James Rosendall claims he bribed in order to get a sludge contract.

According to court documents, "Councilmember A" is accused of accepting thousands of dollars in bribes in exchange for the approval of the contract.

Earlier this month, Detroit businessman Rayford Jackson pleaded guilty to charges that he conspired to bribe a City Council member in the Synagro sludge hauling scandal.

Under terms of a plea deal, Jackson faces a maximum of 5 years in prison.

Jackson has admitted to arranging bribes worth thousands of dollars to a person identified only as "Council Member A," which we now know to be Monica Conyers.

===============================

Statement from Congressman John Conyers

The Communication's Director for Congressman John Conyers - husband to Monica Conyers - issued the following statement:

"This has been a trying time for the Conyers family and, with hope and prayer, they will make it through this as a family. Public officials must expect to be held to the highest ethical and legal standards. With this in mind, Mr. Conyers wants to work towards helping his family and city recover from this serious matter."

They are stealing from us constantly, sometimes by the billions with legislation, sometimes bribes like this. No integrity, the corruption runs deep, very deep.

And people are afraid to expose them. They are very powerful. That’s the reality of America no one talks about.

Another question should be “Did her husband know about it and did he spend the money himself?” I believe he is about as guilty as she is.

Snort. Mr. Conyers wants to work keeping his sorry-ass wife out of prison.

Anybody takin' bets as to whether she ever sees the inside of a cell?

I sent this about five minutes ago to my neighbor. It couldn't happen to a more deserving person!

In other news, how about Conyers! Granted she only ‘Pleads’ to one count (Out of hundreds I'm sure exist) that carries between 3-5 Years in the Pokey but this is a start. Now, let's dig into the Pension Board shenanigans. I'm sure that's good for another 5-10 years.

Of course this is all predicated upon the Authorities not bending over backwards to show ‘Leniency’ in light of her ridiculous marriage to the Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. Now that is quite a joke isn't it?

Watch them try to hide money for her fines in the Cap'n'tax bill.

“Public officials must expect to be held to the highest ethical and legal standards.”

Which makes it hard for me to explain why I dropped the investigation into the thugs at ACORN. But, I’m a politician and you all should expect this stuff by now. How long have we been screwing you and lying to your face now?

BTW - I unhappily concur with those who think she'll get a literal slap on the wrist - Minimal jail time and liberal parole, just like her male counterpart, Kwame.

I guess that depends upon the sentence imposed. You don’t get time reductions in sentences at the fed level do you?

looks as if that is what is happening. They probably would not have investigated ACORN anyway.

"Under terms of a plea deal, Jackson faces a maximum of 5 years in prison. "

Yeah, right.

With her husband's Party having a monopoly on power, she's going to do time?

I doubt she'd do time if she shot someone in cold blood in front of 100 witnesses...unless her victim was the Supreme Leader Obortion, of course.

She has the right to cop the plea. My question is what really was the deal? What did she cover up. Who else is involved? (OK that's three) We will never know what evil these people have done. Give crooks the power and they will suck the treasuries dry. No matter what level of government, there is loot to be stolen, bribes to be taken, and power to abuse. A POX on the Conyers and their ilk!

One thing worth noting is that the US Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan, Terrence Berg is a decent guy with long law enforcement experience so I’m a little surprised that he’s still in office although if Holder tried to replace him he would probably have to work out a deal with the state’s two Senators.
btw: He was appointed under George W Bush.

If she did not declare it on her income taxes, then they both are guilty of TAX EVASION, if they filed a joint return.
