*Welcome to the FReeper Canteen*

Summertime Memories

Running through a lawn sprinkler getting soaked on a hot summer day

Endless games of hide 'n seek which went on as late as our neighborhood group could get away with and the parents called us home

Campfire Girl summer camp with the bugle wake-up call every morning

Hot dogs from the grill with lots of mustard

Cicadas singing all night long... the next morning their empty shells on the tree

A cold, sweet snow cone..with the inevitable dribbles on the chin

Swimming holes, creeks, and lakes.

Chiggers and fireflies lighting up the night

What are some of your favorite memories of summer?

MY FALLEN BROTHERS

THERE UPON THE FORGOTTEN BATTLEFIELDS
WHERE THE DENSE JUNGLE NOW GROWS,
AND THERE ARE NO MARKERS TO EVEN SHOW
THE FINAL RESTING PLACE OF MY FALLEN BROTHERS
NOR THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE MADE BY SO MANY OTHERS.

THOUGH ITS BEEN SOME THIRTY ODD YEARS
MY MEMORIES AND NEVER-ENDING DREAMS,
CONTINUE TO FLOOD MY HEART WITH PAIN-FILLED TEARS.
THERE UPON MY CHEST THEY REST, THE PURPLE HEART
AND MEDALS THEY AWARDED ME,
BUT I WOULD GLADLY TRADE THEM ALL
IF ONLY GOD WOULD ALLOW ME TO ERASE
JUST ONE NAME THERE UPON THAT BLACK MEMORIAL WALL.

NOW LIKE A WOUNDED WARRIOR ALL ALONE
AND STILL ON PATROL, I CONTINUE TO WATCH
AND WAIT FOR MY FALLEN BROTHERS TO FINALLY
COME MARCHING HOME!

William F. Miller

Chimp Eden
If the Lord delights in us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us. —Numbers 14:8

Eugene Cussons rescues chimpanzees. Orphaned by those in the business of bush-meat trade and taken from the jungle as infants, many have lived their entire lives confined in a space smaller than a prison cell. When Cussons arrives to take them to the game reserve he calls “Chimp Eden,” he often finds them hostile and untrusting.

“These chimps don’t realize that I am one of the good guys,” Cussons says. When he tries to put them into a smaller crate for the trip to their new home, they put up quite a fight. “They don’t know that I’m going to take them back to Chimp Eden and give them a life so much better.”

On a much grander scale, God’s offer to liberate us from the slavery of sin is often met with resistance. When He rescued the children of Israel from Egypt, God took them through difficult places that caused them to doubt His good intentions. “Would it not be better for us to return to Egypt?” they cried (Num. 14:3).

On our journey of faith, there are times when the “freedom” of sin that we left behind is more appealing than the restrictions of faith that lie ahead. We must trust the protective boundaries found in God’s Word as the only way to get to the place of ultimate freedom.

Sin’s lure may look like freedom
But in its grip we’re bound;
It’s when we’re bound to Jesus
Real freedom will be found. —D. De Haan

Obedience to God is the key to freedom.

Wow.. summertime memories.

I was stationed at Lowry AFB back in 1980. One day, I left base and went to Red Rocks to chill out. So I am sitting in the ampitheatre taking in the sun on this beautiful day and down at the stage there is this dude playing guitar.

I go down there, say hello and ask if he minds if I listen for a while. He smiles, says no problem and starts playing. The music, combined with the sunshine in this magnificent theatre washed all of my troubles away.

I looked around and said to myself it gets no better than this.

After about 20 minutes I got up to leave. The dude asked me if I was in the military. I said yeah, I am stationed at Lowry. I told him my name and shook his hand.

He said thank you for listening and said he appreciated all we do for our country. Then he introduced himself. His name was John Denver.
