On Tuesday, sources told News 4's Nigel Robertson that a state vehicle is missing and was tracked down, not to the Appalachian Trail, but to the Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in Atlanta.

Sources told Robertson that a federal agent spotted Sanford in the airport boarding a plane. Robertson was told that the governor was not accompanied by security detail.

Why is the Governor being tracked by the media? Doesn’t he have a right to travel incognito?

Secret meeting? Secret emergency meeting?

Does anyone know Gov. Sanford’s behavior pattern prior to his holding this spot? Is there anything in his history to indicate that he might sometimes suddenly go “do things ‘his way’” (as the song says)?

Whatever the case, I think the few remaining neurons in GOP upper management should get on top of this ASAP. Gov. Sanford is one of our more visible players, and so the party needs this situation ironed out immediately.

No. The state he represents has a right to have a governor. There is no telling when an emergency will arise.

He needs to let his detail know his plans.

Would you care if George Bush wandered off for several days while he was president? Would the residents of the US have any right to be concerned?

"Why is the Governor being tracked by the media? Doesn’t he have a right to travel incognito? "

Frankly, no he doesn't. You give up certain privacy rights when you volunteer to be CEO of a state, with all that entails.

This stinks, and most of the stink is coming from the Governor's own camp. Lying only makes things worse. And, if this report is accurate, the Appalachian Trail story is pure bunk.

He was making his annual visit to Galt’s Gulch. Following his return, he will be converting all his assets to gold and disappearing until it’s time for him and the other missing industrialists to come back.

This is just a strange story. Now that I think of it, Father’s Day weekend is an awfully strange time to simply want to get away from his kids.

First Governor Sanford is merely a sitting Governor.

Second, he hasn't just 'wandered off'.

THird, he doesn't owe you any explanation of what he is doing, where he is going, what business he is up to.

Fourth, just what does a past president have to do with this media fabricated, media driven crap, trying to assassinate a strong opponent to the democrat criminal enterprise?

Wait a second, how else would he have gotten to the Appalachian mountains than by air?

Do you know how long the Appalachian Trail is? 2175 miles. Have they said what part he’s hiking? Nope.

From another story:

Sawyer released a statement Tuesday saying, “Governor Sanford called to check in with his Chief of Staff this morning. It would be fair to say the governor was somewhat taken aback by all of the interest this trip has gotten.

“Given the circumstances and the attention this has garnered, the governor communicated to us that he plans on returning to the office tomorrow.”

On Monday, Sawyer had said Sanford was taking time to “recharge” after his failed fight against federal stimulus money.

He said, “The governor put in a lot of time during this last legislative session, and after the session winds down it’s not uncommon for him to go out of pocket for a few days at a time to clear his head. Obviously, that’s going to be somewhat out of the question this time given the attention this particular absence has gotten. Before leaving last week, he let staff know his whereabouts and that he’d be difficult to reach. Should any emergencies arise between the times in which he checks in, our staff would obviously be in contact with other state officials as the situation warrants before making any decisions.”

Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer said he didn’t know where Sanford is but said he had not been put in charge. “I called the governor’s chief of staff and I said I want to talk to the governor and he told me he had not been able to get in touch with the governor and I told him, well, I either wanted the governor to call me or for him to give me a number where I could reach the governor,” Bauer said.

“He said if he talked to the governor he would let him know, but right now he did not know where he was at,” Bauer said.

Sawyer said Sanford’s staff would be in contact with other state officials as the situation warrants before making any decisions, should any emergencies arise before his return.

Senator Criticizes Lack Of Communication

Sen. David L. Thomas talked to News 4’s Nigel Robertson on Tuesday and he said that Sanford’s absence wasn’t the problem — but not being able to reach him was a big problem.

Thomas said, “In raises constitutional questions — Homeland Security has to have to have immediate access to the governor, like you do to the President, in some circumstances … If he wants to go somewhere, that’s his business. That’s completely his business. The issue is how to get a hold of him.

“Specifically, we were told he turned off the cell phone. They pinged him into Georgia, and then everything got turned off, so there was no his own staff could get a hold of him and say, “Governor, we’ve got a serious problem,’ so it created constitutional issues … If you can’t get him, he can’t act.”

Thomas said besides the constitutional concerns raised by the inability to contact the governor in the case of a state emergency, there are also questions about the governor’s safety that Thomas says Legislators are likely to raise.

“We’ve got to make sure the governor safe,” Thomas said. “Again, it creates constitutional issues. Not with him being gone, but him not being in communication with his staff or others.”

Now they tracked down the car and must of passed pictures around the airport to have an “federal agent” say he saw him board a plane. The enemies of Sanford here in SC should be called on the carpet for this. And it all probably leads back to Bauer. He’s upset he wasn’t put in charge. He knows damn well that if he couldn’t be reached it would only be for a few hours via his cell phone. I don’t know where he went but he took off for an extended weekend after the legislature closed shop, so what. His wife nor his staff were concerned but little boy Bauer was and wanted to start trouble. It’s all so much BS. Wherever he went he ought to be allowed to go away without a witch hunt trying to track him down for no good reason.

If you’re not in South Carolina government, why woudl the Governor notify you as to his business, and how the heck do you know whether staff and family know his itinerary?

Sanford is doing that all on his own.
