We’re not suggesting that the formerly missing Governor of South Carolina specifically ditched his family and security detail to go hiking on Naked Hiking Day. It’s just that one of the days he hit the trail also happened to be the aforementioned holiday. [Editor’s note: This paragraph was changed to make clear that the governor’s timing was a coincidence.]
Until late yesterday, no one would say publicly where he was. Poof. He just disappeared.
The story started to resemble a John Grisham novel. A southern conservative governor and very vocal critic of a popular liberal president eluded his security detail and completely disappeared with his last known whereabouts — before he (or someone) turned off his cell phones — somewhere outside of Atlanta.
Staff was silent. Some were talking about succession plans. The First Lady though said she wasn’t concerned. “He was writing something and wanted some space to get away from the kids,” she said.
But many wondered aloud how this traditional, family-loving, Republican governor of a southern state could miss Fathers Day. After all he’s got four children! Was something sinister in the air?
Then it took a Farrelly brothers screenplay type of twist. Sanford had not disappeared. According to his spokesman, he was hiking on the Appalachian Trail. Coincidentally, on Naked Hiking Day.
It’s a big tradition. Many hikers celebrate the summer solstice by hiking au naturel. It just so happened the solstice occurred on Fathers Day — one of the days Sanford was hiking...

Didn’t Teddy Roosevelt do this shit every weekend when Governor? What emergency would possibly require the Governor to be on call at all times? There was no natural disaster.

Having been confronted with naked hikers, they never seem to be very good looking. In fact, they’re usually downright scary. Burqas were made for many of the naked women. The cellulite makes the Baja look like a superhighway.

Perhaps he was secretely meeting with Sarah Palin to conceive some kind of conservative super-child who will appear in the year 2043 to destroy socialism once and for all.

This, I am told, has ended any shot he has at running for Pres. in 2012. If that is true, Gov. Sanford, feel free to run in any SC election for any office you desire and you will have my vote. I'll be happy to have him in any capacity he wishes to serve our state.

Worse than wasps Karl— yellow jackets, in the ground and very aggressive. This former Ohio boy has been tagged by both, as recently as this weekend by a YJ north of Atlanta. You don’t know you’ve disturbed their burrow along the hiking trail until it’s too late.
I’m an avid hiker and I’ve never come across naked hikers. I’ve come across some strange things in my time out in the woods, but never a naked hiker. Okay, maybe he’s a naked hiker, but please tell me he didn’t invite Nancy Pelosi and Barbara Boxer to hike along with him... ggaaaaaaaaaaaaggghhhhhhh!

Sorry, but I used to be an avid hiker until an injury, know every inch of the AT here in GA along with other trails and have never heard or seen evidence of naked hiker day.
