White House: Obama Has No Plan to Alter Tone on Iran Protests

President Obama, who is expected to hold his first Rose Garden press conference on Tuesday, does not want the U.S. to become a "political football" or "foil" to the demonstrators who are protesting Iran's disputed election outcome, the White House said.

Obama has no plans to alter his tone in response to Iran's bloody crackdown on post-election demonstrations, the White House said Tuesday.

"He'll continue to speak out in support of those that are seeking to demonstrate and do so in a way peacefully," White House press secretary Robert Gibbs told FOX News. "We don't want to inject our government in the place of the reformers in this equation."

The president has faced mounting pressure from the GOP in recent days to toughen his measured response to the violent protests in the country over Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's election victory -- a victory many Iranians, including the president's rival, Mir Hossein Mousavi, claim is fraudulent. Many Republicans have charged Obama with taking a passive tone and being too timid in his response to the violence.

Obama, who is expected to hold a press conference Tuesday afternoon, does not want the U.S. to become a "political football" or "foil" to the demonstrators who are protesting Iran's disputed election outcome, said Gibbs.

But the White House left open the possibility Tuesday that it would intervene should the violence in Tehran escalate.

"Obviously if a tremendous escalation happens -- if tanks happen -- we would respond to that immediately," Gibbs said.

So it takes tanks to make ZERO speak out -- bullets don't count or beatings where Iranian citizens are being killed because they dare protest against the Government. Does this mean that he wouldn't consider it wrong for his people to use bullets as long as they don't use tanks?

What a horrible statement to make -- he is obviously for the Mullahs and against the Iranian people which makes me think we could substitue American for Iranian and would be right about how he feels about white Americans.

BTW, I watched that interview this morning on F&F. What a sham. Talk about softballs. I think Obama has worked the FOX refs so much they’re scared to ask anything other than “How’s Bo?” out of fear. Doucy ran most of it and he was sucking up big time.

Thanks for the info. I never watch Fox and Friends because of that reason. When is the last time they asked hard questions except of Republicans?

I still think his attack on Fox was a sham to make sure he got softball questions.

Obama has made so many mistakes with Iran and other countries it is hard to know where to begin, but I genuinely believe he is doing the right thing in this circumstance and I will explain the reasoning behind it.

If the protestors are to succeed they must be perceived as legitimate. The Iranian regime for the past 30 years has brainwashed most of the population into believing that the US is their enemy. Whether this is believed or not, it is a defacto reality that pro-American = Anti-Iranian.

If the POTUS were to actively back the protestors in a manner even slightly more than the current “anti-violence” rhetoric, the Iranian regime would then legitimately have fodder for claiming the protestors were American agents and acting on behalf of the American government. A crackdown with increased violence might then be more palatable and be made more likely.

There is a clearly a split in Iran from the top to the bottom. By taking one side the US would provide the other side with an excuse to de-legitimize the true nature of the interal unrest and claim it was caused by “The Great Satan”.

In this circumstance those calling for Obama to say more are either ignorant of the situation or simply using the situation to score cheap political points —> Which would again show that the GOP has basically sunk to the level of the Demoncrats even in the arena of foreign policy.

Oh, good answer!!! (/sarc)

I expect to see a tank or two rolled out very soon, just so Ahmadnedijad can take the mooning of America to a whole new level.

The revolution in Iran is inconvenient and a distraction from his efforts to negotiate with the thug leaders.
Next question...

You are so right! He is telling Israel what to do every step of the way but when it comes to Mullahs/Iranian Government, he will bow down just like he did to the Saudi King. He supports Muslims and Communist dictatorships and trashes our allies.

The idiot media continues to go along like he is king but someone who can be voted out of office. Their covering for the Muslim will only go so far in shaping opinions as people are beginning to wake up to the fraud and his lies and lack of spine.

After all, Obortion has "plenty to do" altering the United States into a neo-Marxist regime.
