Divided We Stand (What would California look like broken in three? Or a Republic of New England?)
WSJ ^ | 6/13/09

Remember that classic Beatles riff of the 1960s: “You say you want a revolution?” Imagine this instead: a devolution. Picture an America that is run not, as now, by a top-heavy Washington autocracy but, in freewheeling style, by an assemblage of largely autonomous regional republics reflecting the eclectic economic and cultural character of the society.

There might be an austere Republic of New England, with a natural strength in higher education and technology; a Caribbean-flavored city-state Republic of Greater Miami, with an anchor in the Latin American economy; and maybe even a Republic of Las Vegas with unfettered license to pursue its ambitions as a global gambling, entertainment and conventioneer destination. California? America’s broke, ill-governed and way-too-big nation-like state might be saved, truly saved, not by an emergency federal bailout, but by a merciful carve-up into a trio of republics that would rely on their own ingenuity in making their connections to the wider world. And while we’re at it, let’s make this project bi-national—economic logic suggests a natural multilingual combination between Greater San Diego and Mexico’s Northern Baja, and, to the Pacific north, between Seattle and Vancouver in a megaregion already dubbed “Cascadia” by economic cartographers.

It is quite amusing that everyone, and I mean everyone, assumes that Texas will go its own way again.

Not that they’re wrong, mind you, but it seems such a foregone conclusion to everyone. :D

Then what's the point of continuing this sham called marriage? It is time for a DIVORCE!

Well - President Bush backed the secession of Kosovo from Serbia in spite of Serbia’s objections to splitting up the country. And in spite of the fact that not all residents of Kosovo supported the secession movement.

The secession was because of supposed cultural and religious differences which would be the some of the same reasons various regions of the USA might want to follow suit.

So I’m sure that even though he is now a former president, he would would rally other prestigious public figures to join him in backing any region of the US that wants to secede and go off on it’s own.

Isn't that pretty much what the Founders imagined as well?
That's certainly what the Constitution provides for.

“...by an assemblage of largely autonomous regional republics reflecting the eclectic economic and cultural character of the society.”

There should be 50 of those RIGHT NOW. Let’s restore our founders’ vision

Didn’t some Russian academic type just a few months ago suggest that within a few years the US would break up into 3 parts (countries)?

Yes. They regularly wandered down my street in Mira Mesa. My water faucet was frequently used as a source of water for groups of illegals in the neighborhood. You can't get near the Home Depot or any equipment rental business without being endlessly solicited by the crowd of illegals looking for work. The drug problem doesn't need rehashing. Illegals are at the core of it. The emergency rooms are full of illegals.

Contemporary America as a unit of governance may be too big...Her conviction is that large systems tend not to endure—“they break apart, there’s chaos, and at some point, new things form,” she said.

We keep hearing about "too big to fail", but the bloated federal government is now a case of too big to succeed.

That was when our economy was doing fine and George W. Bush was still our President. But now the Russian's predictions are coming closer to reality.

It is time to enact Joe Biden’s plan to partition the country into three parts - here, instead of Iraq.

Let each republic draw up a Constitution of its own, based on Liberal, Conservative and Moderate beliefs. Then, let the people decide under which flag they will live.

It can still be done peaceably - but for how much longer?

dico ut telum! dico ut telum!

There does seem to be a lot of tension between geographical areas in the US. No way it would happen but it would be interesting to do mental gymnastics with the possibilities.
