15-year-old was first to enroll in local gang program

Nearly three months before her fatal stand-off with Rock Hill Police, 15-year-old Yvette Williams had enrolled in a program to help young people get out of gangs.

Williams was the first student to sign up with Project GO — short for Gang Out — in Rock Hill.

The middle-schooler had some gang affiliations, said Project GO executive director A.V. Strong, but she was working hard to get out. Strong said he last saw Williams at a church workshop, and he spoke Tuesday at her funeral.

Strong, who supervises the statewide program from Columbia, said the teen was making progress. He declined to talk in detail about her gang affiliations or what trouble she might have gotten into before coming into the program.

Unfortunately, it seems the program couldn’t immediately undo all of the conditioning from the public screwel and popular teen black culture.
