David Letterman will continue his late-night show on CBS through August 2012 and maybe longer. The host and CBS have worked out a new contract, though an announcement may not take place for some days.
Mr. Lettermans company, Worldwide Pants, and CBS have agreed on the details of the contract, including, for the first time, a reduced license fee for the 11:35 p.m. program, Late Show with David Letterman, and now are waiting for a deal memo that will lay out the terms in formal language.
The news of the new deal for Mr. Letterman was first reported in The Hollywood Reporter.
The most significant parts of the new deal, according to one senior executive involved in the negotiation, were the concession by Worldwide Pants that CBS will pay less for the show over the next two years, and the absence of any specific stipulation that this will definitely be Mr. Lettermans last run in late night. The star is now 62 years old.
But Mr. Letterman and CBS did limit the new deal to just two more years (his current contract runs until August 2010). His previous agreements were generally three years apiece. And in his last published interview, Mr. Letterman said he was not sure how much longer he wanted to continue hosting Late Show.
However, the senior executive, who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly about the negotiations, said that Mr. Letterman did not give any indication that he had made up his mind to step aside at the end of this new deal.
Because of the national economic downturn, CBS has been looking to reduce license fees for all of its programs. The Letterman side found CBSs request for a lower fee reasonable, the senior executive said.

Don’t let the door hit you there on the way out.
As their overall ratings continue to dwindle.....
"The reduced fee does not necessarily mean that Mr. Letterman himself will take a reduced salary his current take has been estimated at about $32 million a year."
There's no way this guy is going to be making less money, especially if he's the new king since Leno was unceremoniously ejected.
The Obama supporters get richer while the people eat cake.
Exactly, he would fire everyone at Worldwdie Pants before taking a pay cut to go under Leno or Conan.
I’m kind of amazed they gave him a new deal. I used to be a huge Letterman fan, but IMHO he jumped the shark years ago. He seems more like a cranky and bitter old man than a comedian now.
You said it BUMP

A ‘dirty old man’.
I have never and will never watch this godawful person.
You are so right on with that. When I was in college almost 27 years ago, he was bright and fresh and funny. Never missed a show. Now, he’s a crotchedy old man an is hugely unfunny and mean. I cringe when I see his face. After his comments about Sarah Palin, I think a boycott is in order.
Letterman should retire after this contract, it is past time already

David Letterman, dirty old man.
Free Republic has these cartoon characters on short leashes.
Yeah, that’s what I thought too. He looks much older. Liberalism sure ages one fast. Must be hard to contain all that ugly!
Hey Bucktooth Deadletter!....you’re dog crap on Sarah Palin’s shoe!
YouTube has the Letterman top 10 done with Obama. It shows Obama reading, as from the oval office, his top ten campaign promises. None attack him, one even goes after GWB. About Sarah Palin, they are all nasty. Obama should have had to list the show as a campaign contribution.
After his nasty “jokes” about Bristol Palin the last couple of days, he deserves more than a pay cut!
Letterman is one sad bitter and pathetic old man.
I never watch CBS, partly because of his sick attitude.
Come to think of it, I don’t watch much of anything on TV and when I do it’s FoxNews, but O’Reilly is downright confused and loves to hear himself talk too much. Now Glenn Beck, there’s a guy who sees clearly and gets smart people on and lets them talk.
