That is an interesting statement. A couple of days ago there was a thread running about how CA wants to dismantle the Healthy Families insurance program for low income familes. Everyone on that thread moaned and groaned about the leeches in the state who use the program. They were lazy and piggy backing off of the hard working people.

Well...a couple of years ago my husband and I decided to home school our kids. This meant me not working full time. We gave up my income, vacations, fancy cars and electronics to do something I have not regretted for one second. HOWEVER, when my husbands insurance went up and we were on the line for $1000 a month (yes, a month!) we had to make some decisions. Do I put my kids back into CA school system or do we look at other options like joining Healthy Families. Well, we joined Healthy Families. My husband and I have always worked (even now I work part time), we've never been on welfare, used food stamps, been on WIC, we pay our taxes, and pay for our children's schooling. But I learned a couple of days ago from a few Freepers - that apparently, I'm the scum of the earth. I can't win!

All you can do is your best for your family. Ignore the critics who haven't walked in your shoes. The state has been brought down by the voters continually voting in liberal leaders who have no idea what fiscal responsibility is. There is finally some hope from the special election. The day of financial reckoning is here for Califoria and only through deep cuts in the budget will it have a chance to come back from the deep end.

You've made the right choice in homeschooling your children. My hat is off to you.

Sounds like you did/are doing the right thing.

Washington State is also cutting back on the state-subsidized health insurance program, but Oregon, of all places, just announced that many tens of thousands of NEW slots will be opened in theirs.

Some families in WA that are losing coverage have found that their children can go onto Medicaid. I realize that is being cut in CA also, but keep an eye out for other opportunities.

Wy wife and I just priced a private policy (high deductible and no prescription coverage) and it is under $300 for both of us. We are in our 50s. The $1000 quote for you seems high. The premium for kids in usually quite low.
