Yesterday, perennial presidential candidate Ralph Nader made a rather explosive claim about Terry McAuliffe, the former head of the DNC who is now running for Governor in Virginia.
His charge? That in 2004-- just four years after Nader had played the spoiler role in the contest between Al Gore and George W. Bush by drawing tens of thousands of Florida votes away from the Democratic candidate--McAuliffe approached Nader with a proposition as to how to avoid a repeat:
He said McAuliffe, who was the Democratic National Committee chairman at the time, had offered Nader's campaign an unspecified amount of money, believed to be party funds, to spend in 31 states in exchange for an agreement to withdraw from 19 battleground states where he could potentially hurt Democrat John Kerry.
Interestingly, McAuliffe and his aides have not immediately denied that the bribes were suggested. Here's McAulliffe spokeswoman Elisabeth Smith:
"It looks like Ralph Nader misses seeing his name in the press. Terry's focussed on talking with Virginians about jobs, not feeding Ralph Nader's ego."
While the relative size of Nader's ego (save for comparison to McAuliffe's) is something that most Democrats can agree upon, the fact remains that if McAuliffe did offer this deal, he was treading on incredibly shaky ethical ground.
Though there may not have been anything technically illegal about using Democratic party funds to pay Nader to "stay out" of 19 battleground states, it's quite clear that such an arrangement would more than likely have remained hidden from both Nader's supporters and from members of the two major parties. In other words, the fix might really have been in.
In the world of Terry ‘The Punk’ McAwful, ethics is a word that is utterly foreign and without meaning.
Lets hope its enough to derail his candidacy in VA....Tho I wish he has been the nominee first.
If this helps keep Mr. McAuliffe off the ballot in Virginia then I think I might be able to just about half-forgive ol’ Ralph for the killing of the Corvair.
He’s still got good bit of work to do, though, because he also helped pretty-much kill the convertible in this country for almost 20 years.
Is Nader talking about the Terry McAuliffe who made $ 18 million on Global Crossing stock on an investment of $ 100,000, just before the stock tanked and everyoine lost their shirts?
Seems like there would be something to convict this SOB right there on.
Terry McAuliffe is second only to James Carville as a rabid voice for the Clintons and bashing of Republicans.
That this excuse for a man could even be considered for Gov. of Virginia is more proof of a massive conspiracy by the Dems to take over this country by a bunch of thugs.
The primary tuesday is, of course, open...
Creigh Deeds.
I can live with him as my governor if he happens to beat McDonnell. Either of the other two, Brian Moron or McAuliffe, might cause me to accelerate my plans to move to northern Alabama.
So vote for the real sleezeball in the primary.
Why? I don’t want McAuliffe to be my governor.
Do you think he could win VA?
Jim “The Porno Merchant” Webb and Mark “The Affable Android” Warner both won in Virginia.
I don’t want to take any chances on what the majority far-left,lib-tard wackos in Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria, Loudoun, Prince William, Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Hampton, Richmond, Roanoke and Charlottesville are going to do in November.
There are more super-partisan “democrat can do no wrong, republican can do no right” zealots in this state than EVER before. Over the last 15 years it has been remminding me more and more of New Jersey every year - except our weather is better.
Good point. Being in Falls Church, I understand completely.
Oh dear. Did I leave off Falls Church? I’m SO sorry.
;^)
PS - I’m currently right on the “front lines” of the invasion: Culpeper County. We haven’t been taken over yet, but the first signs are upon us (e.g. An increasingly nanny-statish local government that is obsessed with making RULES, RULES, RULES to further control how we live our lives).
My grandparents owned a pig farm in Culpeper, eons ago.
The place is very different than it was.
First Question that jumps in my head: "Why wait 5 years to reveal such?"
Sorry Ralph but you blew your chance by waiting...
I’ve only lived in the county for 19 years and it’s VERY different now than it was when I moved here.
Not to bore everybody, but I sat on my dirtbike and watched the first building go up at Tysons, and thought, “Uh-oh...”
And Reston - we thought those folks were idiots, when they built that in the middle of nowhere...
Yup. I know how you feel.
I grew up in Va. Beach. When my family first moved there, most of Independence Blvd was a two lane road and parts of it had only recently been paved. Last time I was there (about 3 years ago) that road was 6 lanes, plus turn lanes at each intersection, and it looked like a “superhighway” (but with traffic lights).
I find it ironic that uber-liberal Nader is taking on the Obama machine and is even calling attention to how GM stockholders were shafted by the administration in the buy out.
Terry said, "Hey I bought stocks, I sold stocks"
