This isn't a particularly helpful thing to say. In Islam, once a land becomes conquered or otherwise part of the 'ummah', it is forever Islamic land. Bin Laden still complains about the need to reconquer Spain, which the Moors lost hundreds of years ago.

At any rate, implying that the United States is in some way a Muslim country is not something that will reduce tensions. Show me a 'partially Muslim' country, and I'll show you somewhere with internal strife. Show me a Muslim country bordering a non-Muslim country, and I'll show you a tense border.

Obama's take on this isn't a constructive line of reasoning.
