This event has all the possibility of a major left wing media coup. The possibilities are endless: his public confession; appearing in court wearing a baggy suit; a carefully selected judge uttering wise statements blaming "teachers of hate;" his public apology- including statements as to how he has been led astray- perhaps even a redemption just before his scheduled execution. "The Divine One" on television commuting his death sentence after pleas by the decedents friends and/or family.

Being mentally ill DOES NOT mean a person is legally insane. No, but it's still a plea in Court, like it or not.

anyone with conservative beliefs is by definition mentally ill and therefore cannot own a firearm. I hear amens from DU.
Combine that with 'Liberalism is a mental disorder' and the government can take way all our firearms...

Maybe he is as “insane” as a Andrea Yates was. Will the ACLU will come to his defense?

I can only assume that
a) you misunderstood that I was referring to a tactic of the left
or
b) have nothing better to comment about than someone’s typing/posting style.

Either way....legally insane or mentally ill there were people out there who knew he need help and just let him walk around. It's not for lack of trying. Existing laws make it extremely tough for concerned family members to get help for other family members that have mental issues and who refuse to cooperate. You can't have someone declared incompetent or insane without due process of law. You can't force them into psychiatric treatment against their will.
The law states they have to be an imminent danger to themselves or others, but if they haven't done anything, just mouthing off, you still have no just cause. Maybe this NAMI article will help you understand what we're up against:

It’s because of the bleeding hearts that crazy people aren’t in the nut house like they were when I was a kid. Now they just roam around as they please talking to themselves and their imaginary friends.
