Carbon fiber is a pretty good transmitter of electrons!

“The flight from Brazil was probably brought down by a lightning strike after hitting a fierce storm, the airline said today”

Still with the lightning BS. They don’t know, period. European carriers and Airbus especially, are masters at trying to get out from under liability lawsuits early. An act of God is easier to defend against, than negligence on the part of the crew or design flaws of the airframe manufacturer.

They’re just doing PR early, with a compliant news media. The CVR and FDR may tell a very different story than a Public Relations hack in Paris.

I guess you'd be questioning a decision to go with a Boeing product too, if you're being consistent.

“Maybe black boxes if the technology (underwater recovery) somehow would allow?”

Odds are high these boxes have sonar “pingers” on them. If they can be detected at depth, and accessed, they will tell a great deal. One thing that newer aircraft data systems do very well, is to scream like a girl on the way down. Flight 1549 certainly did. Compared to 30 years ago, there are literally hundreds of parameters recorded at very high bit rates. Interestingly enough, Airbus equipment streams data continuously as it flies along (I would suspect the newer Boeings do as well). Techs at the maintenance bases have access to what is happening on a real time basis because of this wireless communication. Not entirely sure what's streamed and how much over the ocean. I would imagine there are sat data links, but I would also expect that the bit rate would not be nearly as good as what is available from ground stations when it is over land areas. Anyone know for sure?

Lightning doesn’t sound at all likely or convincing. Terrorism, on the other hand...

Has anyone claimed responsibility? I would think in the absence of any such claim, that it's not likely terrorism.

You haven't lived if you haven't seen a 747 completely covered with St Elmo's fire.

I'll take your word for it...

I know a man and his wife on the plane who worked for my company in Brazil. Please pray for them and their family members.

I thought I heard today that no airliner had ever been brought down by lightening. That seems impossible to me, but I’m sure that’s what they said.

I agree. May God bless them all, and all the people who love them. An enormous tragedy.

A 130 is a lot different animal than an airbus. Mr. Lockheed's Herk can keep flying after loosing all electrical/hydraulic power. I'm certain the Airbus's systems are hardened and other wise engineered to make a lighting strike very survivable but at the end of the day it's a fly by wire, computer operated, data bus dependent aircraft.

“You haven’t lived if you haven’t seen a 747 completely covered with St Elmo’s fire.”

Very common occurence. If it happens during the day, you miss it, but at night. It’s just one of those “special” things that you get to see as a pilot. I never got over how pretty it is. We used to have the FA’s come up front to see it as it washed across the windshields. Awe inspiring enough to make you believe in God (if you didn’t already).

To see it bathing the aircraft though. Very rare. A passenger would be fortunate to see such a display.

True...but basic electrical design (IE airframe GROUNDING of the electrical buses) isn't very much different...in fact I would be willing to BET that the Airbus takes electrical surges even more serious.....
