NKorea May Come Off Terror List: White House

NKorea May Come Off Terror List: White House Wednesday, June 25, 2008 10:50 PM WASHINGTON -- The White House said Wednesday that it could move to take North Korea off a terrorism blacklist "quite soon" after - and if - the North delivers an accounting of its nuclear programs. Washington hoped the secretive Stalinist nation would provide its long overdue "declaration" as early as Thursday, although a senior US official has already said that an inventory of Pyongyang's atomic arsenal will come later. Asked how quickly a full accounting would trigger removal from the US list of state sponsors of terrorism, White House spokeswoman Dana Perino replied: "We'll have to wait and see. It could be quite soon if that were to happen." "We just don't know if they're actually going to do it," said Perino. Washington also plans to remove North Korea from the Trading with the Enemy Act, a law restricting trade with countries hostile to the United States, leaving Cuba as the only country affected by that legislation. Separately, US President George W. Bush sought to dampen anger from close ally Japan, which says Pyongyang must first come clean on abductions of Japanese nationals, in a telephone call with Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda. Bush stressed that he grasped "the importance of the abductee issue," said Perino, who indicated that resolving the matter would not be a precondition for taking North Korea off the terrorism list. Perino said the US position had not changed since US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice signaled in a mid-June speech that Bush could move to take North Korea off the two blacklists upon receipt of the declaration.

UK Telegraph, 12 October 2008:

US to remove North Korea from terror list after nuclear deal The United States will remove North Korea from its terrorism blacklist after the secretive communist state agreed to American demands over nuclear inspections, Washington has announced. Philip Sherwell in New York Last Updated: 11:05AM BST 12 Oct 2008 US State Department spokesman Sean McCormack announces that North Korea has been removed from America's terrorism blacklist .

The deal is a major diplomatic breakthrough for President George W Bush, backed by his Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, as he sought a foreign policy success in his final months in office. But it was immediately condemned as a sell-out that rewarded a rogue state by the neo-conservative hardliners who once dominated his administration. John McCain, the Republican presidential candidate, also expressed strong concerns. North Korea's decision-making process was thought to have been in limbo after its leader Kim Jong-il reportedly suffered a serious stroke in August. Significantly, Pyongyang on Saturday released the first pictures of him making a public appearance in two months.

State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said the announcement was made after North Korea accepted wide-ranging verification measures of its nuclear facilities and agreed to resume its disablement programme.

Believe me, both Dems and Repubs alike have been sipping it for 20 years. Clinton-Bush-Obama alike.

PS I like your tag. IMHO Sarah Palin has a lot to loose over this long range ICBM nonsense stuff, from the perspective of her native Anchorage. I think she could politically benefit by severely attacking both the inaction of President Obama and the mistaken action of President Bush before him on coddling and being fooled by Kim Jong il.

The fallout from these foolish, naive decisions to put "Personal Legacy" above Country and Regional Ally (Japan/ROK) is only now being felt. Lord help us all with it coming to fruition with this current nitwit in the White House.

Well stated. I think Palin can benefit as well from this dolt in the WH and his misguided policy direction toward Kim. I think Sarah will pounce on a blatant misstep. Hope so.

"Negotiating" with ruthless, lying dictators, and then expecting adherence somehow is very American, cuts across both parties when you look at our history, and is one of the most naive and stupid things ever.

We learn that lesson now in the next few weeks and months.

Hugo Chavez is already exchanging Marxist literature with Obama - he just gave him some books of Lenin and Marx as a present. I'm sure Obama already read them.

As for Ahmadinejad, he probably cannot wait for his first meeting with Obummer... it will go something like this:

Yeah, I saw that before I posted, but the MSM is promoting any news they regard as positive now in an effort to prop up their Messiah.

Anything positive that happens now: Obama
Anything negative that happens: BUSH, Cheney, et al.

Let’s face it. Obama is the biggest failure as a President. He should have never been elected. He can’t even feign carrying about American citizens. He needs to step down.

well... the current situation after a nuclear blast the size of hiroshima is far different than what was happening in 2008.. and if you don’t think the weakness of Obama had anything to do with the current N. Korean activity you have your head in the sand too..

Life is fluid and what was a good strategy then may not be a good strategy now..

Focus on the now is my suggestion.. not enough people standing up for Bush security policy was a big problem in the 2008 election.. Thank God Cheney is starting to do that now..

Obama needs China to buy bonds, to keep the lid on the bond market, so Obama can swoop Universal Health Care thru the legislature before it all melts down.

If you had trouble understanding why NK was going to “pay a price” two days ago, and is “off the terrorist list” today...

...now you know.
