Hard times send Latinos back across the border
The Minn. Star Tribune ^ | May 29, 2009 | JEAN HOPFENSPERGER

A year ago, Primitivo Morales had a home in the suburbs, two children in college and two successful businesses on E. Lake Street in Minneapolis. But the economic downturn, combined with cranked-up immigration enforcement, has driven customers away and crushed his personal finances. After 25 years in the United States, he now is reluctantly making plans to return to Mexico. Morales, 45, is part of a trend unfolding across the state and the nation. Latinos in the prime of their work life are returning home because their dreams have collapsed along with the economy. The numbers are still relatively small, say Latino leaders, but for the first time in years, the door back to Mexico is swinging open. "There were people up and down Lake Street a year ago; now there's nobody,'' said Morales, glancing sadly out the window of his restaurant, La Poblanita, onto the street. "The construction workers who used to come here are gone. ... And many [undocumented] people now are afraid to venture out. "Many people have left for Mexico.'' While there is no data that precisely documents the trend, there are clear indicators that Latino communities are facing their biggest economic challenges in years. The number of Mexicans immigrating to the United States dropped by 25 percent from August 2007 to August 2008, according to recent Mexican census data. The amount of money sent home by Mexican migrants dropped by $1 billion last year, the first decline since the government began tracking it 13 years ago, according to Mexico's central bank. In Minnesota, Latino unemployment jumped from 4.7 percent in 2006 to 7.5 percent in 2008, according to the most recent figures from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development. Latino leaders believe the figure is even higher today...

I wish this would become a major trend, but with all the "free" social services available here that they couldn't get back home in "their" country (the one they want to replicate here), I'm not holding my breath. I'd love to be wrong.

I saw this coming. However, down in mexico, (you know, that great country that latinos celebrate it’s ‘greatness’ every May 5th) it’s not exactly the land of milk and honey.

I feel the same. I am hopeful only because the states going bankrupt are going to be unable to continue to provide services, either to them or us. I will take it.

I’m happy to see illegals leaving, but this Primitivo seems like a good example of POSITIVE immigration. He pays taxes through his business and if his kids are really in college that’s a plus for America. Now the construction workers he’s so sad to see go, on the other hand...

That’s true about dwindling services, but I’d bet that American citizens will be the first cut, and they will be the last. It’s too bad it’s not as easy for the Somalis to go home. My azz has been chapped over them ever since I read the story of how one group of them deliberately targeted a small town in Maine in order to attach themselves parasitically to the town’s small but seldom-used social services resources, and thereby overwhelmed the town. That is the most cynical, parasitical use of American generosity by a group I’ve ever heard of, and I know it couldn’t be an isolated case.

Its now the PC word for anyone who is not white or black. I don’t think they make the distinction anymore. Kind of like how illegal aliens are now undocumented workers or plain old immigrants. Slight of hand tricks.

I personally don’t care what border they cross, as long as it is in the right direction; out.

Cry me a river...NOT!

While I do applaud those who have come here legally and hope they can recover from this mess like other fellow Americans, it's high time the 'undocumented' freeloaders left. This has probably got a few Democrats worried since they comprise a good chunk of the voting base.

You have to love the MSM. “Mexicans are leaving the US.” “There is NO DATA WHICH DOCUMENTS THE TREND...” So this tearjerker article is based on...NOTHING! We are nevertheless supposed to feel quite badly for all of these folks who invaded our nation quite illegally, sucked up as much free money from taxpayers as humanly possible, committed countless crimes.... Charming. Just charming.
