Expect this video clip of Sonia Sotomayor describing the importance of the circuit court of appeals in policy-making to get a lot of play in the coming weeks.
One thing the Supreme Court Sotomayor pick tells us is that Obama’s recent talk promising to find common ground was just talk.
The Puerto Rican from the Bronx who went to Catholic schools is Obama’s pick to replace Justice Souter on the Supreme Court.
As Americans United for Life (AUL)‘s president Charmaine Yoest points out:
“For all the President’s talk of finding ‘common ground,’ this appointment completely contradicts that hollow promise. Judge Sonia Sotomayor’s judicial philosophy undermines common ground. She is a radical pick that divides America. She believes the role of the Court is to set policy, which is exactly the philosophy that led to the Supreme Court turning into the ‘National Abortion Control Board,’ denying the American people the right to be heard on this critical issue. This appointment would provide a pedestal for an avowed judicial activist to impose her personal policy and beliefs onto others from the bench, at a time when the Courts are at a crossroad and critical abortion regulations supported by the vast majority of Americans like partial-birth abortion and informed consent laws lie in the balance.”
Or, as Father Frank Pavone put it:
“Does justice include the right to tear the arms and legs off of babies, crush their skulls, and treat them as medical waste?
“We all draw the line somewhere. An avowed racist or anti-Semite is not acceptable on the Supreme Court. Why should we give a pass to the violence of abortion?”
Nonetheless the possibility that she’s Catholic (no one seems to know if her faith stuck in adult life) is frightening some:
“It fascinates me that practically no one dares to say too many Catholics,” writes legal blogger Ann Althouse. “If we’re ever going to talk about group representation and diversity, we need to talk about the overrepresentation of Catholics. Catholics are 22% of the U.S. population. 6 is 66.6666% of 9.”
The PC alarm in her head immediately adds: “On the other hand, we really can’t suddenly start noticing all the Catholics just when a Hispanic name comes up for the first time.”
She points to Christopher Hitchens who in 2005 bravely grumped about Catholics on the court in this Slate article.
The article is like a greatest hits medley for Hitchens:
“Why should this question be asked only of Catholics? Well, that’s easy. The Roman Catholic Church claims the right to legislate on morals for all its members and to excommunicate them if they don’t conform. The church is also a foreign state, which has diplomatic relations with Washington. In the very recent past, this church and this state gave asylum to Cardinal Bernard Law ...”

For those in this Country who stood on principle and refused to vote for John McCain and in some instances said ZERO was a better pick, how do you like his pick now?
Some people still don’t get it that elections have consequences and naming a SCOTUS is one of those. Standing on principle is fine but not when you give the election to the bad guys. Ronald Reagan and his 80% said it best. Some even on here need a lesson in reality and this pick should do just that. If not, they are a lost cause. Third Party talk is a waste of time and anyone with half a brain knows that — it elects DemocRATs and we are seeing what that is doing to our Country right now.
This pick couldn’t be much worse — Hispanic Woman activist judge who rules by feelings. How did Republicans under Lott ever allow her to sit on the bench? Spineless wimps.
Give me someone I agree with at least 80% of the time that has a spine and they have my vote. I am tired of spineless Republican conservative politicians. I want more Inhofe and Coburn not Lott-lite which McConnell seems to be turning into with endorsing Crist in FL.
This must be my day for rants because I did one on the OK board a short time ago. I am totally frustrated with what is happening not only in DC but in the OK Legislature where they wait until the last minute to pass bills that none of us know about. BTW, both houses of the OK Legislature are not Republican so I think I am even more disgusted with them because they are doing the same tricks the DemocRATs did where the taxpayer foots the bill.
Lol .... expect things to get much worse before they improve. The great advantage to venting here is the opportunity for discourse. 4 years ago, I gave up watching the news. It is a one way medium with no way to respond.
Santayana reminds us that "those who do not learn from history, are forced to repeat it". One need only look at ancient history (or recent history, for that matter) to understand where our nation is headed. Interestingly enough, we are accompanied by most western nations down that slippery slope.
So rant on but realize that those who voted for O responded to his vacuous words. They bought the false promises of a self-proclaimed god becuase they have replaced the Eternal God with government. Pray for this nation!

With all due respect to the Catholic Church because I really do appreciate the stand they’ve taken on the conservative issues, when are they going to get serious about these CINOs?
Free will is a gift from God. In the Protestant faith, those who disagree with one denomination split off and start their own church. In the Catholic Church, the great challenge is to approach those who disagree, by educating them. That's difficult if they are not weekly attendees at Mass.

I'm not sure that education is really an issue for someone at these political levels. They certainly know what abortion is all about and it's no secret, by any means, what the Catholic Churches stand on abortion is.
