N. Korea's 2nd nuke test occurred few kilometers from previous test site: weather agency

SEOUL, May 25 (Yonhap) -- North Korea's second nuclear test on Monday appeared to have taken place 10-15 km away from the site of the first test in the country's northeast, Seoul's weather agency said.

Pyongyang's state media confirmed the country has "successfully" conducted the underground nuclear test but did not say where it took place.

The Seoul-based Korea Meteorological Administration said it detected seismic waves from the nuclear test 10 to 15 km away from the 2006 test site around the town of Kilju, North Hamgyong Province.

"The waves were detected 10 to 15 kilometers away from the previous test site," said the administration's earthquake detector, Yoo Yong-gyu.

The agency also said the artificial earthquake was detected at 9:54 a.m. with a 4.5 magnitude. In the previous test, the detected magnitude was 3.6, it said.

The North said on the second test was conducted on "a new higher level in terms of its explosive power and technology of its control."

So they did it before rainy Monsoon season hits. Still, I thought that they would take more time and do it in June.

A nice send-off gift to Roh Moo-hyun. Actually, it is more like a last insult because the test would remind everybody of who helped it along. The current government who worried over possible leftwing fallout from Roh's death has political windfall from this. Any backlash will be seriously tempered by N. Korean nuclear test.

Time for Roh's gorupies to contemplate about N. Korea's ingratitude toward Roh, by setting off a nuke at such a wront moment, killing off their emotional momentum. Not that it will happen. It will never enter their mind.

Locations of the nuke test

radioactive hazard marking: previous test on Oct. 9, 2006

cencetric circle marking: today's new test.

To its right, at railway junction, is Punggye-ri, Kilju.

Further to the right, at the coast, is Munsudan-ri, the ICBM test launch site.

Don’t think so, kids—this quake was at a depth of six miles. NOBODY digs a hole that deep. Nah, there was a quake and the NK’s are trying to make a wild claim, like their Dear Leader shooting 8 holes-in-one on his first golf outing.

Somebody is a combination of "pissed off" and "worried".

" Still, I thought that they would take more time and do it in June."

Perhaps their collaboration with Iran is speeding up both timetables?

I wonder where relative to these was the alleged first nuke test in Korea, the one the Japs allegedly set off on the last days of WWII, after Nagasaki. History channel had a couple hours on it and it was written up by a reporter not too long after the 'fact' based on a supposed eye witness. As the Communists took over that area we weren't able to investigate it directly, but I don't know whether we held the area at any time during the Korean War. The claim should someday be able to be proven or disproven. I'd think evidence must remain of some sort if a rigorous scientific analysis were permitted, i.e. once the North falls. I could understand our knowing it had happened and covering it up; there being no obvious advantage to us from having it known and disadvantages on both civilian morale and proliferation concerns from making it known.

Still, if true, it would be interesting to prove the Japs were only a month behind us in testing their first nuke. That would make Pelosi's apology in Hiroshima last year sound even flatter than it did. Pelosi is currently trying to hide in Shanghai. N. Korea nuked her gambit. I hope the Asian press asks her what she's hearing from the CIA on this AND whether she believes them! It also would prick Russian pride to no longer be in second place. However it might hurt Sino-Japanese relations.
