Welcoming Tennessee wins integration award

The Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition (TIRRC) has won a $50,000 award for its Welcoming Tennessee Initiative, which has been partially focused in Shelbyville over the past year. The prize, called the E Pluribus Unum national award for exceptional immigrant integration initiatives, was given to the TIRRC in Washington, D.C. Wednesday by the Migration Policy Institute (MPI), which describes itself as an independent, non-partisan think tank "dedicated to analysis of the movement of people worldwide."

TIRRC launched its Welcoming Tennessee Initiative (WTI) in 2006, and began to focus on Shelbyville in last year, beginning with a billboard campaign, followed by several events held by the organization in conjunction with local groups such as El Centro Latino.

I didn't know whether to laugh or scream when I read this paragraph:

"According to TIRRC's Executive Director Stephen Fotopulos, "The impact of the Welcoming Tennessee Initiative is clear: Members of communities receiving immigrants are more likely to respond to the challenges of immigration with empathy rather than distrust or fear, decision-makers are given the political room to pursue proactive policies, and immigrants feel welcomed and encouraged to participate and contribute."

If you'll take a moment to read this article from the Wall Street Journal and this one from World Net Daily, you might be able to excuse those of us who aren't exactly jumping up and down in joy at the news of this award.

Is TIRRC composed of a bunch of immigration lawyers looking for clients? It sure looks that way ...

No wall, but we didn’t ask for the flood gates to be opened. If you’ll read the WSJ article I posted in #2, you’ll see we have them flowing in from everywhere and maybe understand the problems it’s causing.

Members of communities receiving immigrants are more likely to respond to the challenges of immigration with empathy rather than distrust or fear

If they are ILLEGAL immigrants then distrust is merely common sense as a prudent person should distrust anybody who has demonstrated contempt for the law. The common sense instinct for national preservation that EVERY nation should possess is now laid on the altar of PC nonsense.

Unfortunately, they’re legal; mainly Somalians brought to Shelbyville via refugee programs.
Thier lack of desire to assimilate into the community has caused a lot of distrust, among other problems.
Brian has covered things extensively at the Times-Gazette over the past year and a half or so.

Call me xenophobic, but given the nature of Somalia today, I cannot feel comfortable with Somalian immigrants, legal or illegal.

Just wondering...if they are bringing in Somalians....will local lakes be safe from pirates?

Though, unlike the ships in the Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden...those dudes with the boats there will be properly armed....

We’re sillier than Europe. Our gov’t. sees what’s happening there and still allows this to go on here.

I'm with you 100%. I've been uncomfortable with them for quite a while now.

Shelbyville, a tiny little town overrun with “immigrants”, has tons of problems with them. First it was the Mexicans and then the Somalis. I’m glad I am nowhere close to it.
