Vatican: Obama seeks "common ground" on abortion
Associated Press ^ | May 18, 2009

The Vatican said Monday that President Barack Obama was clearly looking for some common ground with his speech at the University of Notre Dame about abortion.

The Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano said Obama's speech at the leading Catholic university on Sunday confirmed what he had said at a recent news conference — that signing the so-called Freedom of Choice Act in the U.S. Congress wasn't his highest legislative priority. The bill would protect a woman's right to have a child or end a pregnancy.

Obama's stance on the issue is that he supports abortion rights but says the procedure should be rare.

The article didn't mention the protest by dozens of U.S. Catholic bishops who denounced Notre Dame for honoring Obama because his abortion rights record clashes with fundamental church teaching.

The Vatican has been open to Obama ever since his election, despite his record on abortion and support for embryonic stem-cell research, which the Vatican also opposes.

Pope Benedict XVI broke Vatican protocol the day after Obama was elected, sending a personal note of congratulations rather than wait to send an official telegram on inauguration day.

L'Osservatore Romano gave Obama a positive review after his first 100 days in office, saying in a front-page editorial that even on ethical questions Obama hadn't confirmed the "radical" new direction he had discussed during the campaign.

“common ground” on something that is an abomination in the eyes of God?

I think not.

So embryonic stem cell research and funding for foreign abortions are positive first steps? Got it!

Vatican: Obama seeks "common ground" on abortion

WTF does this even mean? Is the Vatican condemning 0bama's abortion stance or is it not?

Somebody at L’Osservatore Romano is seriously delusional about Obama, but then the same could be said about many American voters! People are so blind — they just believe any nice sounding words they hear and don’t look behind it at the actual record and policies of the person saying them. I am depressed about how many foolish people there are in this world, and even in my own family.

Common ground will ONLY be found in actions. To date, Obama has DONE NOTHING to reach common ground with pro-lifers. He talks a good game, but when it comes down to it, he is through his actions the most pro-abortion politicians in the U.S. government.

Christians, rightly, do not believe that Mohammed is God’s prophet yet have little problem accepting Hegel as some sort of post-Christ prophet.

Abortion is murder, there is no “synthesis”.

Obama's stance on the issue is that he supports abortion rights but says the procedure should be rare.

Right, "rare." Put up or shut up, Barry. How about legislation that would freeze the total number of abortions allowed at 1/2 of last year's rate. Then, cut it in half the following year, and half again the next year. In a few years, they would be rare.

“Obama seeks “common ground” on abortion”

What a relief. /s

Seeking “common ground” doesn’t affect the outcome for the (murdered) pre-born.

Please. Obama’s monstrous. A bald faced liar...words fail. Why in the world the Vaticam wants to have a dialogue with this baby killer is beyond comprehension.

WTF? So then I guess he doesn't care how rare it will be. Now the Vatican is getting sucked into this idiot's word games. Good LORD!!!

"Vatican: Obama seeks "common ground" on abortion"

That's a missleading headline. Obama's so called common ground was an effort to reduce the number of obortions, not the act itself. Obama's actions have shown he is interested in making abortions more availible, not exactly a reduction.

I’ll truly be off to SSPX if this is representative. I don’t think it is indicative of the Pope’s thinking, however, other than in a diplomatic way.

How many Catholics would be left if all who supported abortion were excommunicated as called for in the Catechism?

There is no common ground when it comes to taking a life, born or unborn. A life’s a life. What a sorry excuse for a president. I’m praying some big scandal is uncovered that takes him down.

Hey, if he can figure out some sort of abortion that doesn’t end up with a dead baby....I’ll talk common ground with him.

“Common ground” means that those opposed to abortion compromise their principles. It NEVER means that the killing stops. The leftist killers are perfectly willing to meet you half-way. They are willing, for the moment, to accept the killing of the thousands in place of the killing of the millions.

I believe Israel sought “common ground” with the Philistines. I’m trying to remember what God said about that...I’m not a learned theologian, so I may get confused easily.

that’s sorta like trying to seek common ground with muslims...”we want you all to die.”

how do you come up with middle ground on murder?
