WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court refused Monday to delay the upcoming trial of former Louisiana Rep. William Jefferson on bribery and other charges.

The former Democratic congressman has argued that prosecutors trampled on his constitutional privileges as a lawmaker. But the high court refused to hear Jefferson's appeal to throw out the indictment against him.

Jefferson was indicted in 2007 on multiple counts, including soliciting bribes and racketeering. Investigators raided Jefferson's home and found $90,000 in cash stuffed in a freezer.

A federal judge has set a June 2 trial date in Alexandria, Va.

"Lawmakers" have special constitutional privileges not available to the ordinary riff-raff?

Who knew?

Tell me the demographics of the jury and I’ll tell you the outcome.

Looks like the democrats(and liberal judges) want this thing over before the 2010 election gets in gear. Hence...no delay.

This can’t possibly be an AP story. Can’t be.

They mentioned that he was a Democrat in the SECOND LINE OF THE STORY? They only do that to Republicans.

Well, if it's a jury of his "peers" he will be found not guilty.

This guy should have been tried by now, convicted and sent to prison where he belongs. What’s the holdup? If he was a Republican he would be half way into his sentence by now. Damn double standards.

It wasn’t just Hastert whining about the over reach of the executive branch raiding a congressperson’s office.

His lawyers successfully stalled until there was a Democrat in charge of the FBI and DOJ.

How many times does the constitution use the word ‘privilege’ in regards to elected officials? Aren’t they supposed to be our servants? Not in the domestic servitude way, but they’re there to serve the interests of the nation, not to serve themselves. The privilege to take bribes of $100,000 and keep $90,000 of it in one’s residence is definitely NOT protected under any law.
