Newsweek Editor: Woo Hoo! Our Magazine Circulation Is Being Cut in Half!!!
NewsBusters ^ | May 18, 2009 | P.J. Gladnick

"Hey Dad! Great news! My report card grades are half of what they were last term!"

And just before my father would have smacked me upside my head for being so absurd, I would have quickly pointed out that the editor of Newsweek, Jon Meacham, is celebrating the fact that his magazine's circulation is being cut in half. Of course, back when I was a kid Newsweek at least made an attempt to be balanced and no magazine editor in his right mind would have been happy about such a drastic decline in circulation. However, that is exactly what Meacham is doing as reported in the Washington Post by Howard Kurtz:

Jon Meacham admits it is hard to explain, even to his own people, why chopping Newsweek's circulation in half is a good thing.

"It's hugely counterintuitive," the magazine's editor says. "The staff doesn't understand it."

I wonder if Jon Meacham will invite your humble correspondent the the Newsweek block party when they celebrate their circulation plunging in half. Of course, the party next year will be even bigger if Newsweek finds out that their circulation declined by much more than that.

When they fold, I expect Jon Meacham to be so jubilant that he will wear a lampshade hat and jubilantly toast the failure with expensive champagne.

If they do, you may be asked to bring the dip and chips ...

Because chopping off 1/2 your #$#@ is better than chopping off the entire thing? But I guess that’s something better asked of Jon “Stubby” Meacham...

Easy!!They are losing money on every issue so if you half the circulation they will lose just half as much.

"The staff doesn't understand it."

Well, the circulation is being cut in half... so, I'd expect half the staff to "understand it", and the other half of the staff to "not understand it".

Of course he’ll be happy. He & his cohorts can just cash out whatever’s left and retire very very comfortably. So long as it’s still going they have to maintain investments and keep running money back into the collapsing system.

Just tell them that cutting circulation in half is like chopping our income in half to support a bloated federal government, or chopping our freedoms in half to give Obama absolute power. They support the two cuts I mentioned, so that should make them see that losing readers is a good thing for a magazine. As their Furher says, "When you spread the readership around, everyone benefits."

Dead Tree Media is doomed...

Everytime someone buys a new cellphone with internet access, or a laptop computer with wifi its another nail in the coffin of all non-eletronic media.

My mom is over 70 she reads all her news online now. I never tried to talk her into it she just up and told me one day all the newspapers she used to read cost too much and she realized everything she read in them, she'd read on the net at least 24 hours prior.

Cut the circulation in half and celebrate, and then cut it in half again. It works for me. I’d like to see all of the pop media follow the same plan.

Isn't this already part of the attire of moonbat journalists? It's the ranks who wear the foil, the elites who wear the lampshades...or something like that.

And now for the Jon Meacham money quote punchline:

Meacham sees only a perception problem. “In making arguments,” he says, “we have to make sure people don’t believe we’re partisan.”

Thanks for a Monday morning rollicking laugh!!!!!

I saw him on a Sunday show yesterday, and all I could think of was the famous word of Rosie O’Donnell: Deloooooosional!

A question for Jon Meacham:
What newstands currently carry this magazine? I have not seen it in supermarkets for years, where people apparently prefer to get their ‘news’ from People, US, the Enquirer, ‘O’ and Cosmo.
